Funniest LFS statement you ever heard?

This'll be off topic, but working at an LFS I have heard some rather interesting things. There's two that really stick out for now.

Me: Thank you for calling, how may I help you?
Customer: Do you guys have any rodi water? (May I note that he did not spell out RO/DI, he simply said rohdee. It was hard to not laugh.

funny not funny. why spell it out,R-O-D-I, when easier to say rohdee. I say it all the time

This was a text from a good friend.

Look at my new wrasse I just got from X LFS. They said it is a rare fish and reef safe. What do you think?

HA, I told him to take his juvie, coral eating parrot fish back and slap the person that told you all that.

" Yea those are called " Hallucinations" . They are very rare and collectable $200 each polyp" . Lol still cracks me up

Awesome thread! Shows that not all LFS owners are in it for the same reason realy. Whenever i go to a store i've never been to i basically just try to find out if the owner is either an obsessed hobbyist or just in it for the money. But as stated before, under the wrong circomstances, anyone stressed enough to get the money needed to feed his family could turn to a scrupulous salesman.

One funny experience i had:

Me (getting info before getting into the hobby):
What is live rock, why is it alive?

LFS: well, it's alive becouse it is made up of coral and corals are animals, not plants.

Me: but that one looks just like some ordinary rock, i don't see any coral.

LFS: it takes some time before the coral shows, that rock just got shipped in.

He wasn't being completely full of it, some live rock can carry some nice surprise coral.

Luckily i went thru this research stage for over a year before actually starting to purchase stuff and get started. Otherwise i would have been looking at a piece of rock for a long time waiting for "the corals" to pop out.

DON'T ACCLIMATE CORALS IT STRESSES THEM

Here's a funny moment
(different LFS than the last one I posted)
Some newbie: Can this fish (a powder blue tang) live in my 40 gallon breeder?
Owner: No it grows too big for that small of a tank
Newbie: Oh thank you
Owner: Glad to help

Bet you weren't expecting THAT ONE

There is in fact a paly called hallucinations which is $200 per polyp which is very rare and collectable

I'm happy to report the LFS I frequent is excellent. Feeling pretty lucky actually after reading these. I guess I need to find a new one so I can share a story on this hilarious thread!

It's funny to see folks bag on people who aren't even present to refute/explain/say they're sorry. As if you are superior in some meaningful way.

I bet it's the same thing the other way around in many cases. Where collegues tell stories to one another about us customers while we as customers are not present.

I think it's just funny, and handled anonymous without calling shop or employee names. And who knows, some might encounter such a situation after reading this thread and then knows he or she is being sold nonsense.

There are enough good shops out there and i think we all do our best to support those. Thinking of it, opening a thread asking for stories about everyone's favorite LFS ( without calling names as well) and how this LFS owner or employee saved us that one time or was just being knowledgeable in advising us, might make for equally good stories and attention.

Lol. Are you that dude that was working that day? $200 a polyp! Hahahahahahah

This thread does reveal some very funny experiences for sure!

I do want to restate what has already been said in here multiple times and that is that MANY MANY LFS are excellent and for many of us were the first places we learned this hobby. If it weren't for some great guys at an LFS (or 2 or 3 or>>>lots of them), I wouldn't have known what I was doing when I started out. I made plenty of noob mistakes anyway, but some of those LFS guys really saved my tank inhabitants from my lack of knowledge. I think we all know this, but I want to be sure we're all reminded...again. So even in reading these stories, be grateful (maybe even MORE grateful) for those good stores and employees out there who keep this hobby rollin'!

However, as this thread shows, some LFS workers say some really crazy/funny/weird stuff, revealing that just because someone works at a store doesn't mean they have the knowledge to qualify for the position...hence, we have this thread.

I ask everyone who is participating in the thread to be careful of 3 things in particular:
  1. Remember in telling your stories (and reading others) that these are anecdotal experiences...they're not meant to be conveyed as typical of ALL or even MOST LFS. (I think everyone has been good about this so far)
  2. Do not name any specific stores or individuals. The stories need to remain anonymous. (Again...so far everyone has done great with this)
  3. Please remember R2R is a family-friendly forum, and so all posts should be clean of vulgarity/profanity (I have had to clean up a few posts already in here)
Thanks guys! Great stuff! Carry on! :-)

This thread is bashing LFS's and their employees in a completely unproductive, negative way. You aren't helping anyone, you're just making fun at someone else's expense.

This is not R2R's style.

I have to disagree - keeping it anonymous does nothing but prevent lawyers from being interested. It does not improve the nature of the thread. But then I don't have to read. :)

As the original poster of this thread can we close this thread? The intention is getting lost and being taken too seriously. We don't want anyone to feel it is a personal attack or meant to belittle anyone directly.

Its time to move on.

I think this thread gives, new to the hobby reefers, an idea of what can be expected at some LFS. I see no negativity here since no particular names of people or companies are mentioned, unless mdbannister already removed them before I got to them. This is harmless and unfortunately at times true but, as mentioned a few times in this thread there are some really GREAT stores out there as well that do offer great advice. I have read many posts on this site from new to the hobby reefers who got a bad start due to bad advice from a LFS.

Well I have to admit I don't need to quote my grandmother very often but let me quote her here: "if you don't have something nice to say it's best not to say anything at all."

The OP has requested that this thread be closed, and so his request will be honored. However, I do want to reiterate that neither this thread nor the OP have violated any R2R policies.
