Funniest LFS statement you ever heard?

Looking at a big, beautiful 8" Magnificent Foxface that was simply labeled as a Spinefoot for $49.

Me: How much for the Magnificent foxface?

Owner: "It's just an ordinary Spinefoot and too big for most of our customers tanks, so I'd be thrilled if you took it off our hands".

Me: "If you are sure, then bag it!"

My LFS is terrible, they have no clue. They are actually a pet supply chain that sell some marine fish, but it's the only place I can get fish locally. I have stopped going, it makes me too sad.

Me: Your Blue Tang looks very malnourished
LFS: Yes, she is sad and won't eat
Me: What are you feeding it?
LFS: Frozen Brine Shrimp
Me: They will eat some of that at times but you realise its a herbivore?
LFS: Oh really!
Me: Yes, they graze all day in the wild and your tank is sterile looking. Maybe try some nori or at worst those algae wafers on the shelf right there.
LFS: What is nori? Oh algae wafers, I didn't even know we sold them........
Me:

What irritates me the most is when I see them saying to the kids that enter the store, " Can you see Nemo and Dori?"....... I just think oh no another poor little guy headed for the toilet :(

Ugh, it's the worst when you hear bad advice being given to parents whose kids are excited about getting fish, because you know the kids will be heartbroken when the fish dies. I once witnessed a family buying a "dragon" as the kids referred to it (lionfish) to go in the tank with their "little blue fish." The parents asked the employee if it was ok to put in their tank, and he hesitated, but ultimately told them, "Yeah, you'll just need to keep an eye on it." I think I said something along the lines of, "Yeah, keep your eyes on it and watch as it eats your other fish..." Parents seemed to pause and discuss, but they bought the lion, anyway. The least I can hope is that the kids grew fonder of the lion than their damsels.

LOL poor damsel, the one time they are getting picked on! or eaten....

My LFS also sold a clown to a woman with a fresh water tank, I was there when she returned for a refund.

LOL will keep in mind all these comments. I just need to be upfront and think about the animals health instead of the money if I open a LFS.

I learn the hard way as well.

ME: Will this fish ( Lionfish ) get along with my clown fish .
LFS: Yes as long as you have plenty of live rock for hiding.
ME: Ill take what does he eat?
LFS: Its trained to eat frozen krill.
ME: ( ticked OFF LION ATE MY CLOWNS AND INVERTS )

Its not with me but with a new hobbyist entering the hobby and i was standing there...

Hobbyist: What kind of fish can i keep with clown fish ?
LFS: you can keep everything in the tank as clownfish is very safe and doesnt harm the fish
Hobbyist: my tank is 3 footer suggest me something black.
LFS: have good size (9 inch) ghost fish take it it would look lovely

He actually packed the fresh water ghost fish for that poor hobbyist...

From time to time I chat with the owner of my lfs and he seems very knowledgeable but I wouldn't bother to ask his employees anything. They're good at catch and bag and that's about it. A good part of this hobby is learning who to take advice from. Most enjoyable thread I've read in a while. Brings back memories of going to the local dime store 55 years ago. At the very back of the store the owner had a row of 5 gallon tanks where he sold a few freshwater fish. He had two pairs of convicts and hatched fresh brine shrimp daily to feed them and always had a tank full of fry. Who doesn't get mesmerized by baby fish? When you purchase fish he would pack them up in a little wax paper chinese food takeout box. You could tell from his tanks and fish how accomplished he was and taking a hard look at the tanks in any lfs should give you an idea of their knowledge.

Years ago I worked in a fish store, and being young and naive, I felt good customer service required HONESTY, and a degree of customer education. A customer was drooling over a very expensive, small juvenile Arrowana (this was before reef keeping took off - 1972), and asked me if it would be a good fish for their 55 freshwater community tank, and I said "No. It will eat everything in the tank and could grow to over 5 feet, given the right circumstances". The customer thanked me and left the store. That afternoon I was looking for another job after the owner tore me a new one and yelled: "I'M NOT IN THE BUSINESS OF BEING HONEST. I'M IN THE BUSINESS OF SELLING WHATEVER THE CUSTOMER WANTS". I told him I appreciated that, but I felt that happy customers were returning customers, and word would spread of how good his store was. His response was: "THAT'S NOT YOUR CONCERN. I PAY YOU TO SELL FISH", at which point I told him to kiss a certain part of my anatomy and walked out. The store closed the following year.

Keep them coming guys and gals. This should be added to my new book by doomsday publishing.

Everything I ever wanted to learn about death and funerals. Advice from a local Fish store.

Really its a public service...

I'm going to assume/hope you meant "public service" lol

I remember upon start up being sold a large rock with glass anemones also. Turned out to be Aptasia. After a 2 month battle to eliminate them, I go to a different LFS. I watch all rocks for any 4 years later and incidentally- That store I mentioned NO longer carries ANY livestock of any sort
