Gas Bubble Disease in Maroon Clown?

The white stringy stuff is from an internal parasite. Could be an intestinal worm or possible Hexamitiasis. I am wondering if it could have been the latter, because with Hexamita lesions will often appear on the fish’s head and sometimes other parts of the body. Don't know why I'm just now thinking of this.

Looking at the pictures, do you think the fish had some sort of tumor/growth also? Someone else's clown on r2r has a similar issue and it would be great to find answers on the cause and cure.

It's possible. Most fish don't live long with tumors, even if it's benign. You would have to dissect the fish and examine what you found under a scope to know for sure.

Did dissect the fish, but did not look at what I am assuming was a growth under the microscope though. There is a photo of the growth(?) cut open in the photobucket album. It was a solid mass.

Here you can see the mass attached to the skin and the border where the hole was in the fish's side.

That mass does look "tumor like", but to be honest I'm not 100% sure. @Lionfish Lair anything about tumors in Noga's "Fish Disease: Diagnosis and Treatment"? My copy is in storage.

The slide is of the skin scrape over the affected area. It was either the 40x or 60x lens i believe (plus the eye piece also provides 10x magnification if I remember correctly). I still have the slide so I can look at it again and give you a definite answer.

I stained the slide with gram stain.

You are correct. These are the gill filaments :0)

Photo bucket and I do not play well with each other. The pictures may be out of order and not all the captions saved :mad:

I did not see the swim bladder (but I will admit that I am not familiar with fish anatomy, though I did try to google images). One of the first things I did was cut out where the mass was and remove that portion. As soon as I took that section off, you could see into the body cavity and there was a hole/void inside the body.

So this is with the flap of skin and mass removed...

and a better picture (the mass was cut open in this photo). Is the swim bladder attached to this piece of skin (white balloon looking piece by the mass)?

This thing I'm pointing to should be the swim bladder. It doesn't look like it should however. There's 2 "globes" and that would be the smaller one in the back. So there wasn't another large "balloon"? Sometimes they are deflated, so that you wouldn't note them. It's a little hard to tell as you are not gone completely into the cavity, so some of the position identifying organs are still covered. the thing above wasn't connected to the intestine, right?

In the pic below, the blue is pointing to the gallbladder and the green is pointing to the spleen.

Is it in the skin and doesn't wipe off? It's probably chromatophores.
