Gem tang price

Ok to answer how much I'd spend on a fish, probably 200$ max. Maybe a hair more if it's something I REALLY like. Much as I love the hobby, I ain't spending more than that for a fickle, temperamental thing that looks fine but may readily croak on you and you have next to no recourse after a few days. It's gonna keep some fish out of my tank for that reason, but it's what it is.

Wish that was still true. Mine had a powder blue today and it $150.

no idea what they go for these days. Saltwater fish is 175-200 for a powder blue.

but ya every place had to increase prices.

Highly aggressive is what I know they can be. The scopas is one of the worst with aggression when it comes to new inhabitants.
Didn't know that, thanks.

Will keep a watchful eye on him if I add new fish, but not likely in a 75g :)

It already has the scopas tang, a foxface, 3 Stocky Anthias, 3 blue chromis and a pair of clownfish.
Not to mention about 30 snails and half a dozen shrimp.

I need an upgrade soon.

It just got out of control

Interesting how everyone just tells me what the lfs is selling them for or how much the fish cost around them but not telling me what ud actually pay. That was my question people
How much would you pay? Not what's it going for around you...is this the world we live in now? Lol.

How much would you pay for a gem tang? Or what's your cap on a fish?

As mentioned, purchased for $300 @ NY Aquatics in July/2019.

Curious what everyone would.pay for a gem tang?!
I recently purchased one and haven't received it yet but I believe at 1 point in time this was a $3k fish. ??? Am I mistaken?
What would you pay for a gem tang ay?
Ty all and reef on!

You are correct - they were quite expensive - and I think in certain areas they were more expensive than others. At an LFS here - 2-3 years ago they were $800. when on sale - I saw them lower - it all depended on what their supplier could get.

At one point I was going to buy one - I had arranged to pay $350, - have it delivered, QT'd and kept for 30 days.

I had to rehome a 4" scopas when I added the purple/yellow trio, It went bezerk. Currently have a sailfin with two yellow & a purple and no issues.

One problem with your question is that that price almost anyone would be willing to pay would be based on multiple parameters:

1. Size of the fish
2. The general condition of the store/you're familiarity with the store
3. The condition of the fish.

For example I wouldn't pay $200 for some online vendors selling quarter sized gem tangs - whereas I might pay $500 for a 4-6 inch fish that I had been able to observe in an LFS for a period of time.

I honestly didn't know that they were agressive, it is such a friendly tang that gets scared by the blue Chomis when I put a sheet of nori on a clip in the tank.

Live and learn

I have no interest in a gem tang but…

cap on wild fish is around $150 and captive around $300. I would prefer to buy the fish in person to avoid shipping stress and see they are eating and acting normally when spending a lot. However, places like TSM I feel are honest and have good customer service so I would spend more with them then some other venders. Lots of factors.

Agreed. The scopas was the terror of my initial 7 tang gang. It about killed my vlamingi and about killed my gem before it was removed and stir fried.

You think they're agressive or not agressive?

Mine has shown no signs of agression and he's in a 75g with a foxface. They are best buddies.
The foxface was first and the scopas was tiny but they would have baby fish if they could :)
Gems are more aggressive then purples in my experience and purples are super jerks lol

I just saw a 4" gem tang at a lfs for $700, this lfs usually has some of the better prices in town. On another note, my experience with the scopas tang is very different than some of what I have read here. I have seen them be one of the mildest tangs, happy to live in trios and groups, usually not threatening in any way.

I’m not crazy about gem tangs. I don’t find them pleasing to my eye, but that’s just me. I know I’m part of the minority here.
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder! Agree, Gem tang isn't the most colorful or "pretty" fish in the tank but there is something about them is very special, very elegant. I had to rehome my because I already have the Purple and Yellow in the main tank and didn't think the little Gem has any chance against those bullies.

Well here's hoping my small dinner plate sized purple won't kill ny gem tang. Lol. Adding a large squirrel fish too so hoping the purple will be distracted enough to mild up. We will see
Ty all for answering. Sorry I didn't even think of some of the parameters mentioned
