Hey guys, I just recently received a hammer coral, and I placed it in the middle of the tank, it’s getting pretty good lighting and it is not getting direct flow, but the thing is that it’s been 2 days and it has not opened. Is this normal? Or how long do they take to open?

Thats a bit vague. What kind of light are you running?

I find Hammer Corals easy to keep. Of course, this isn't everyones experience.

Mine is about 4 inches from the water surface and pretty much directly in front of flow.

I would suggest that you move it around the tank as it should be open by now.

If you would provide a full tank shot so we can see where you've placed it in relation to light and flow, it would be helpful.

I’m running T5 actinic blue lights. There’s a power head to the right of it but it is faced upward mainly for water movement, the flow is not directly at it.

Depending on your tank parameters and type of fish you have in your tank. Hammers should open up like other corals. Is that an angel fish in your 2nd post 1st pic?

Don't see you have other corals in the tank, is this your first coral?

I’ve had spas for a couple of weeks now and they’ve been doing really good. I have a coral beauty angel in my tank but it does not bother it at all.

There looks like alot of skeleton showing in that pic. What are your levels? Also it looks like a wall hammer and they don't take flow too well. I'd say also they don't require massive amounts of light either. My suggestion would be to move it to the sand bed and not give it too much flow. Keep up up to date with it.
This was my wall hammer that I had for over 10 years before I lost it to brown jelly disease. It was about 10 inches across the longest part.

Yeah I’ll move it to the bottom to see if there’s any change, thank you!

How old is the tank?

The tank is about 2 1/2 years old, it was a fish only tank, but I wanted to upgrade to a reef tank, I removed my Koran angel and vogabond butterfly because they began to nip at it.. my coral beauty hasn’t even noticed it tho so I’m not worried about him.

If it were my tank, I'd bring it up closer to the light and give it more flow. You should see results in a day or so, as long as your water parameters are good.

What are your parameters? Your rocks look very clean for over 2 years old. Have you dosed medicines into that tank for sick fish? How often do you do water changes?

I hate saying this but I cannot see a come back.only reason being I have had hammers for years. Never seen one come back looking like that in my tank, but let’s keep good thoughts.

Let us know what happens.

I wouldn't have a wall hammer again as they are alot more sensitive than branching types. Has it got a jelly substance coming off it at all either brown or white in colour. Also if you tank was fish only what salinity is it running at?,
Calcium levels?,
Alkalinity?

I added the live rock about 3 months ago since I didn’t have any in my tank because I just had a fish only tank.

Salinity: 1.025
Calcium: 435ppm
Alkalinity: 3.0

So more flow?
