Help me stop flooding my home

So after many nights of drinking fine spirits while wondering around waiting for buckets to fill, i bought a brute can to put my RO containers in as a safety net. Then one night i passed out after a day long enough that i should not have been making water. When the brute overflowed, i almost had to find a new place to live.

Now, since marriage is cheaper than divorce....

I purchased a roto-mold container and installed the RO fitting through top and attached a cheap ol float valve. I then bought more RO tubing and ran my waste line into our flowerbed with a Y that goes to the street.

Now, when i forget i am filling the main container, which is about 50% of the time (thanks babe for the never ending list of things to do :D) the float valve kills my RO unit and the flow sensor on my line kills my RO booster pump (sometimes). Waste water stops shortly after. If it doesnt, i dont care because i have a solid line running out of the house than has 0 chance of leaking anywhere inside. If, and highly unlikely, if my float valve fails and the RO pressure is enough to bypass my water stations seals, i have a smarthings water sensor at the base that will audibly and via text notify me that it sprang a leak. This has not happened and i test it every 90 days to make sure its working.
 
I would like to install the safety system that allows me to run my ro/di and have it shut off on its own. I currently have a three stage marine depot ro/di that has been upgraded with the brs upgrade kit (pressure gauge and tds moniter).

The way I make water is I have a traditional hose output in my basement and I just drain the water out the bottom of the house. I was wondering what is the process to say install a float valve in my 20 gallon ro/di bucket to prevent it from overflowing. I believe there has to be a way to stop the flow of water at the point of me filling the bucket.

also, the flow restrictor determines your waste:product ratio. typical units will have a 3:1-4:1 ratio. this ensures your membrane will and di will be as sufficient as possible.
 
Is there a difference between this setup and the one cheaper on brs?

not sure other than spectrapure wrote the book on water purification in our hobby. i only trust their products. i personally don’t get cheap when it comes to rodi.

I also use the Spectrapure RO/DI control system in conjunction with a booster pump and the BRS 150 dual membrane system. I recently switched to the 3 different resins for the DI part. I use 2 Norwesco 105 gallon storage tanks. One for my RO/DI storage and one for my SW mixing. The Spectrapure control system is great. I also use the Spectrapure ATO and AWC systems.

Get a 10 dollar float valve from brs or whatever. If you’re worried it might fail instal a second, a touch higher as back up

What exactly does a booster pump do and which side do you put it on?
I feel I am wasting a lot of water through the waste line, what’s the thing that makes u end up with less waste?

booster pump will increase your psi. not needed if your psi is 40 or above.

again, the flow restrictor controls the waste ratio. you need to periodically test your waste ratio.

How does one test the waste? The tds meter or?

The higher the pressure going into the ro membrane, the better. Think of it as pushing the water through the membrane. For me my psi at my system was 65 psi. The booster gets me to 90 psi. Now a booster in combination with a dual membrane reduced my waste water to a 1:1 ratio. Where I live in AZ, my TDS coming into the house can be as bad as 650 TDS. I do have a water softener, and I do use potassium cubes vs sodium which is easier for the membrane to reject vs water with no softener.

So the dual membrane works by taking the waste water from the first membrane and then feeding the waste into the ro membrane of the second ro membrane. So with my BRS 150, I can get just over 200 gallons per day of water, with the same amount of waste.

I also went with the cation resin, anion resin and the mixed bed DI resin. With a 650 TDS level going into my first RO membrane, the output TDS of the second RO is 4. Right now with the 3 resin DI setup the only resin showing depletion is the anion. After about 1500 gallons of water produced, the anion is about 50% used.

I am actually lucky to have like 70 tds going in the first membrane. I also have 90 psi right off the basement hose output. Didn’t realize I was so lucky

the major downside to dual membranes is that you’ll burn through di faster. but it sounds like you’re getting good results right now. what brand of di are you using?

I currently am using a marine depot ro/di with brs filters and the upgrade kit with like the tds meter and stuff on it.
