How did you convince your spouse???

Hide it... that's what I do my wife couldn't tell you what I have in my tank or what's spent on it :)

Told her I was getting a frag tank just leave it at that come home with a 8ftx4ft tank lol she hasn't seen it but its almost ready to be set up. Not letting her know or waiting to find out still feels like all he'll is going to break out. Like others said just do it and let her find out on her own. When she does say something tell her it was smaller in the pics..

When you come home with a sunburst anemone or say a peppermint angel[emoji6][emoji6](30,000$) and when the wife asks we say "oh that, oh that was only a 5$ frag or fish

When my wife left for a business trip we had a 72 bow front, when she returned we had a 6ft 135 gallon ;). Probably not the best way to approach these things but like previously mentioned it's easier to ask for forgiveness lol.

I just flat out told her straight up that I love her and pretty please!

Looking to keep busy the rest of this winter and have been researching the past month on the possibility of doing a plywood build. Would be an upgrade from a 90 to a ~220. I'd love the extra amount of aquarium space, and I have the perfect spot in my office (which I spend a good amount of time in when I'm home).

The hardest part of this build is going to be convincing the other half to allow it to happen. So my question is this...How did you convince your spouse to let you do a large project? ;)

Your Fist!

Just kidding, bribes work well. win win

I know some of this is tongue in cheek, but to have to "ask permission?"

She asked what I wanted for my birthday, I said a Saltwater fish tank. We figured out what we could afford and the space we wanted to give up for it and then I started. I keep the cost as low as possible because I know what we can afford. It's a marriage.

Ah the fun part. Long story short I told my wife a friend was giving me a tank a little larger than the 29 cube I had...... Then showed up with a 90 gallon tank, stand, and canopy. Haha. Forgiveness not permission. It's the only way! Lol. I'm lucky. I've got a good one that puts up with my shenanigans.
Ahh my favorite excuse is a friend or a customer gave it to me then hide the receipts. I deal with a lot of cash sometimes so im able to get stuff without a paper trail.

Lucky for me... It was actually a gift from a friend.

After snorkeling in Hawaii she found that she loves Yellow Tangs and my current tank is too small for one. So I promised her a yellow tang.

Told her it wouldn't cost much lol

At first she was like what the heck. Now she is the one that buys more than I do. Calls it "her" tank now.

My biggest fear is, when I die, my wife will sell the reef tank for what I told her it costs. or will cost in my case because I'm only mid-process of getting it started.

Actually I didn't tell her I was doing this, until she went to find out what the smell was coming from the basement. She asked me what I was doing with a tub of rocks! Always better to ask forgiveness than permission.

I've never ever convinced my spouse and never will. She doesn't care for aquatics at all. I still have 4 tanks in operation to her displeasure. She basically let's me do what I want and I let her do what she wants. I mainly only hear from her about the money I'm spending-lol. If you truly enjoy doing something, then your spouse will come around eventually. Basically, we're a power couple together but we both have individual interests. Let each other do as you please and you'll be happier for it. Been together for about 7 years and have never had an argument. It's great!

Mine isn't into fish much at all. She's interested in looking at them but that's all. So I do the forgiveness part. Fortunately we decided early on that we keep bank accounts separate so all financial stuff is separate if she only knew. As long as I'm paying more than half the bills, take care of the house she really just chides me a bit and then she enjoys

I've always let my wife make her own decisions and encouraged her to find a hobby she chose to collect baby wraps and carriers and you think this hobby is expensive, she probably has 50-60 of them and they cost between $300- $700 for a stinking piece of cloth and not to mention i think the last 2 kids were born so she could stay in tbe hobby....now thats pricey

What is a baby wrap?

Man, am I sure glad I have never had this issue of asking for permission. Me and my boyfriend work as a team. He tends to take care of our freshwater tanks and I take care the saltwater. He has a '72 Nova sitting in the garage that he always wants to work on and upgrade. That's fine by me. If we have the money and that's what he wants to do, then by all means do it. Sure, we ask each other what the other one thinks if they're planning on buying something pricey or starting something new, but we've never had the issue of, "I'm not interested or don't like what you're doing, so no." It just seems a little silly to me that one person can't have a hobby because the other person isn't interested in it. I guess it would be different if someone was blowing money that they shouldn't be on something though.

My husband came to me about 7 months ago with the idea of upgrading from the 90 gallon to a 210. My only stipulation was that we move it into the living room (instead of hallway where it was) so we could all enjoy it more!!

Budgeting helps. Maybe budget for the new
Lighting one month, the tank itself the next month, etc. It might not be immediate gratification, but life happens sometimes (we found out we were pregnant right after we bought the new gear! Lol).

I come home sometimes with my own corals or fish. I would say most wives enjoy having a tank. They're beautiful to look at! And everyone needs hobbies. If your wife isn't into saltwater, let her indulge in her own hobby.
