How to Reduce DI Resin Consumtion?

Hello all,

I was wondering simply of ways to reduce DI resin consumption? I have around 350-400ppm coming in and I get 0ppm out but have probably chewed through half my DI resin in 40 or so gallons of water.
 
I've turned all my DI resin brown from blue, but it is still producing 0ppm TDS water. I only have 80-90 ppm incoming and my RO membrane knocks most of that down to right at 0ppm... what im saying is even tho the color changed, doesn't mean it is exhausted. Check your TDS before you toss resin that is still working.
 
That’s a good thread but if his TDS coming into the DI is 400ppm then I think there are other issues at hand.

You do have an RO unit correct? And it is functioning properly?
My bad that's tds into than a system idk what it's at just before the DI
 
I believe he is saying his water from the tap is 400 TDS, atleast I hope he is otherwise he has some very nasty water lol
 
What I do to save DI is to divert the first five minutes of start-up to waste. When you start a DI system, you get break-through TDS that will accelerate DI consumption if not sent to waste. BRS sells a three way that I use to do this.

I also have a question regarding this.

I always have water sitting in my DI compartments which I sure does not help in the slightest, is there anyways to like flush this out so when I am not using the RO/DI the DI compartments have no water in them?

I have started doing the same and it has helped prolong my DI resin. I happen to have the color changing resin right now and one chamber is completely yellow/brown and the other about half and it's still producing 0 TDS. When I start up my RO/DI unit, I start it with the membrane flushing:

And the DI diverted to waste. After a few minutes I check my inline TDS meter before entering the DI and if it's down to 1-3 TDS I flip my flush valve to start running it through the membrane, wait another minute or so and then flip my three way valve over to start running through the DI.

ETA: when I'm done producing RO/DI I flip the three way valve back to waste and flush the membrane again for a couple minutes before shutting it down.
 
Like @redfishbluefish suggested, diverting the first few minutes of water before they go into the di helps! I also added a dual di stage to my rodi system. So now it goes, sediment filter > carbon block > carbon block > ro membrane > di > di. I use spectrapure dual di setup and this has increased the longevity of my resin significantly. My input tds is close to 300 and I was going through di resin in about 100 gallons. Now I can produce at least 5 x that amount before seeing 1 tds. Maybe more. Here is the di add on kit I purchased and now use spectrapure's super di cartridges (they are a little bigger volume and packed very well)...

Any dual di setup will work, but spectrapure's comes with their resins.
 
Excellent suggestion, also what kind of water pressure coming in are you getting Evan?
I have a booster pump and run 80psi. I will test tds into the DI when I'm off work, I also currently already divert the first minute or two of water but might start diverting the first 5 min or so.
 
If you want to save resin, get a tds meter for every outlet. I have 5-550 in and 5-6 out of r/o unit. Before I had a meter after r/o I found out I had 15 out of r/o. I removed the water saver (seconds/o) and went with one unit. That brought tds down to 5. Much better. But I still only get probably 2-300g of water before tds creeps up. That’s life on a well with hard water. Everyone is correct. Flush r/o till tds goes down. Then turn on restrictor but send water to waste ,not DI. When tds goes down again the. Run through DI. Also I have 80psi.
 
Hmm I don’t go as far as diverting the RO output when flushing because it’s coming out at a much lower flow rate and IMO is negligible. I just run my system in ~40 gallon batches to a Brute trash can, and flush everytime before turning the water on, until TDS gets below ~20. Once I close the flush valve the TDS is down to 3 or 4 ppm within 5 seconds. I check the TDS periodically while it is on but it never seems to creep up much.

I considered the water saver option/booster pump/auto flush, etc but then decided running in batches made the manual effort very minimal.
 
It makes a difference with my water. When I stop flushing it takes a few minutes to get down to 5 or 6. High tds water though.

I do this also. Helps quite a bit
 
Look for the BRS video on running seperate DI resins. I would burn through the mixed bed in 60 gallons. I now run three DI resin canisters. Cation then anion then a final mixed bed. Now i can get close to 240 gallons per canister os resin and only have to change the anion. I barely touch the cation or the mixed bed. This makes it much cheaper as i am not wasting unused cation resin due to exhausting just the anion resin.

The BRS video explains this and its well worth the expense of a few more di canisters.
