Hurricane florence! - The Aftermath

Sorry, I guess that's not very helpful. Depends a bit on where you live. Last time I looked it appeared that SC was most at risk, maybe cat 3 or 4. If you have to evacuate, short of a stand bye generator with a week if fuel, there's probably not a foolproof mitigation plan. Even a stand by isn't entirely maintenance free, requiring oil top off every day or two. Battery backups for circulation at a minimum, though hard to have something that'll last days.

There's are always things that exceed ones ability to mitigate; a major hurricane with days/weeks of lingering impact is probably one of them. I live in the Northeast and have been of the opinion it is just a matter of time before a hurricane hits us. Maybe it's Florence, though probably not; but if one does hit even my stand by may not be enough.

I've been through 5 hurricanes in the last dozen or so years. Get a battery powered airstone at the minimum. Turn off your heaters and lights, crank your AC as low as you can go. It's the heat that will kill your tank. If you have a generator do not bring it in your house!!! Or put it near a window. CO will kill you it is odor less. Stock up on water and ice and alcohol beer is an excellent bartering/good will tool. If you can get dry ice and pack your fridge with it. Good luck.

If you have to evacuate and have a generator running keep a laminated note on it outside which explains why it is running. Someone had a natural gas generator running and a concerned neighbor walked over and turned the gas line off while they were evacuated. This was during Hurricane Harvey in Texas. It is documented on reefcentral.

He came home and his whole system was crashed.

Okay!! New quest! How to take it with me ???? Please help I’m stressing. It’s looking like a cat4 hit so we will probably leave

I know it hurts but forget your tank take care of yourself! Cat 4 is no joke! Your doors will fail your windows will fail your roof will be gone much sooner. I've seen a cat four get out and take your valuables and legal papers and heed the evacuation notice. Don't bother with your tank. Throw your tank inhabitants into the sea( I live near the coast so it's much easier) if you are sentimental don't worry we already have Lion fish and the Atlantic needs new species ( Yes I know that invasives are bad) if not put them in the fridge for a quick death. Good luck!

All depends on how close you live to the coast, how strong it is and exactly how close you are to where the eye makes landfall. Worst case scenario you live close to the coast, it’s stronger than a cat 2 and the eye passes over your location or within 40 or so miles. Too far out to get an exact landfall at this point. If you need to evacuate worry about family 1st, then valuables and documents. If it comes ashore where your location will be devastated and you want to try and save some of your tank inhabitants your gonna need to take them with you. Depending on the size of your tank if it were me I would get some brute cans, put a decent amount of your live rock in them, put the corals in them and the fish. Get a bunch of battery operated air pumps(extra batteries) and hopefully it’s enough to save as much of the livestock as possible. I would start prepping everything now if your in the projected impact zone. Hopefully it’s not as strong as forecast and doesn’t make landfall.

If you are expecting a cat four at your house leave! A cat 2 is a joke a cat four is a killer. If you are in the projected path of a major hurricane's landfall ( which is where the eye makes shore) get out if your house is not CBS or more than 20 years old. Yes it does depend on how far indland you are but if you are within 60 miles from the eye typically you will get major damage and if you are within that radius and you are on the north east side of the storm you will get the brunt of it. Screw your tank save your family. Good luck.

20 miles can make a big difference in a hurricane. Not sure where you're at but don't panic
Yes 20 miles can make a big difference but it depends on the storm. Andrew trashed where my highschool was but my house was fine. It's not just the storm surge and sustained winds it the tornadoes the storm spins off which are completely random.

I agree with Fishfinder. Hurricanes very rarely hit where they predict 5 days out. By all means get prepared but as a South Florida native I wouldn’t stress just yet. A lot happens in 5 days.
Gas for the generator and just run your pump and power heads. Freeze a case of small water bottles and stick one in the sump if it starts to get too hot. You should be able to run a fridge/freezer and some fans as well. One 5000 window shaker in a room to sleep in at night till power is back on. I’ve gone up to two weeks without power and only lost a chromis and a angel fish in a freshwater tank. Corals did fine. Tanks got up to 89-90 degrees at times.

It was @OrionN.

Get caught by surprise and regret.
