Hypo in a 240g FOWLR

The parasites should be dropping off the fish by now, and the CP should protect them from reinfection.

As of this morning, here is the latest...all four are still alive. The Longnose Hawk eats mysis but I still have not seen the Green Bird Wrasse or Harlequin Tusk eat. I have not seen the Tusk eat since around the 3rd or 4th. It tends to just stay up against the PVC and not do a lot of swimming. The Green Bird is always hiding back behind a rock or PVC. The Purple Tang eats, but has become more skittish the last couple days. It hides in the PVC and pops out to grab a mysis and goes right back in. Before, it was always out swimming.

I saw in another post that 10 days is all the CP needs and that if you can set up a separate QT, the fish can be transferred in as long as everything is new? I might be able to pick up/borrow a 20g. Do you think moving the fish into that is the way to go?

Yes, but remember fish only. Nothing else from the original treatment tank can be reused for the observation tank.

I think getting your fish out of medication and into clean water is the best chance to get them eating again. But they have to stay in CP for 10 consecutive days at therapeutic levels (40mg/gal) for this to work.

My 240 is still hypo with no fish since the 8th. Would that make the usual 76 day rule (assuming Ich was part of this mess) any shorter?

Not much has changed. All four are still alive. I'm not seeing them eat but assume that they must be when I'm not watching them. They all look clear of spots or anything bad.

No, because hypo will not kill the tomont stage (which can take up to 72 days to rupture). Hypo only eradicates the free swimming theronts, which are released from the tomonts when they rupture.

Arghhh...today I was going to add a filter with carbon to start removing the med. of course it does not start when it worked a couple weeks ago.

Bad news to top that off. I found the Longnose Hawk and Green Bird Wrasse dead. It's down to the Purple Tang and Harlequin Tusk. They look clean and are swimming around, so hopefully they do okay. I have not seen any eat recently, but I think they are. It's difficult to see the entire tank under my son's tank.

I'm going to do a big water change in the morning and get carbon for another Magnum filter to add tomorrow after work.

I'm hoping that getting the med out will help with eating. The Tusk and Tang both swim around, but hide a lot as well. Both look clear of disease and have good coloring now.

I'm bummed about the Longnose Hawk, as that was one of the original inhabitants from a couple years ago.

It's been a while, but wanted to put up an update. The Tusk and Purple Tang are still alive and appear to be doing okay. The Tusk sits around a lot but last night was acting odd. It was swimming around along the top of the water and poking it's head out of the water. It actually had it's eyes and mouth above water at times. Any ideas why or has it just gone crazy?

Is it sucking air when it pokes it's head out of the water? Not enough oxygen, perhaps?

Well, I'm not exactly sure what happened, but the Tusk died over the weekend. It never really looked great from day one in QT, so not a huge surprise, just kinda surprised it made it so long. I had high hopes for the Purple Tang, as it seemed to be doing good. It seemed less active after the Tusk died, so I figured maybe that was due to being the only fish. I found it dead today after work. In the end, disease wins. I figure about $1200+ gone.

The 240g is still fallow and I would have been adding fish back in on the 28th. Now it's back to square one and weeks more of this depressing empty tank.

I'm so sorry for you losses. It's very sad to watch this happen, but you gave it a great effort.

I know how badly this stings, as I have experienced wipeouts in 200-300 gal systems. The only thing you can do is look at it as a chance to wipe the slate clean and start over. QT each & every specimen from here on in.
