I only have 8 outlets and 15 things to plug in....

I wouldn’t double up the heaters. That could easily overwhelm the amperage.

Each EB832 outlet can handle 7 amps, so unless you have 800 watts worth of heaters you'll be fine.

MP40 x4
Vectra L1
300watt heater
Algae scrubber
Skimmer (2 pumps)
Neptune feeder
Doser
Light
Tablet
Eventually avast marine swabbie and locker
I’m pretty sure there are a couple things I’m forgetting...

Remember, the 832 actually has 8 - 120V outlets, 2 - DC24 outlets and 3 1link outlets. If you have an FMM, you also have another DC24 outlet at your disposal. I just wired 2 fans to one of the DC24 ports and will be wiring my sump light to another. If you're handy, you can also get a relay and use the DC24 outlets to run a relay switching 120V

- Your Neptune Feeder shouldn't need an outlet since it plugs into the aquabus.
- Can the 2 skimmer pumps be tied together?
- What kind of light? If it's an LED you could possibly just control it with a 0-10V port
- The tablet doesn't need the Apex
- All the MP40s can be tied together

I do not have a dedicated circuit, I talked to a family friend about making one dedicated circuit amped up to 20. Haven’t gotten around to it, pretty crucial?

Dedicated circuit is by no means a requirement, its just an extra step in safety and to protect your tank.

Here is what happens with non-dedicated outlets.

Let's say your tank is running, mid day all lights on, heater kicked in, depending on the tank of course and the equipment this would be different but lets assume you draw 8 amps. Your circuit is limited by both the wiring and matched breaker to 15 amps. Your wife in another room plugs in her iron (to an outlet that's on the same circuit) to get the wrinkles out. Everything on that circuit goes dark (including your whole tank setup). Panic ensues; calls are made to your job, hopefully you are around to answer and walk her through.

Let's get back to apex.

The whole EB8 strip is rated to 15 AMPS, pretty much what a standard household circuit can handle but each individual outlet on that strip is rated up to 5 AMPS except outlets 4 & 8 (10A each). If you group 2 x 300W heaters and plug it into outlet 1, you will melt that outlet and possibly cause fire. Same thing happens if you plug the new 60" LED ATI PowerModule which draws around 980 watts into anything other than outlet 4 & 8 and you will likely have a serious situation on your hands.

Keep in mind that even if the entire strip is rated to 15 Amps, in non-dedicated circuit situation the "capacity" of that circuit goes down with each device plugged into other outlets on that same circuit. Example: there are 4 outlets around the room. 1 provides power to your big screen TV with other equipment (lets assume 3-4 Amps, could be less or far more depending how elaborate your setup is), the 2nd outlet is behind your desk with your desktop computer and dual screen setup (a powerful setup at 3 Amps). That leaves only about 9 AMPs for the outlet behind your aquarium stand and outlet #4 somewhere else in that room. 9AMPS on a larger tank is nothing!

With that in mind do remember that even though each outlet is rated up to 7 Amps, the sum of all equipment on that strip cannot exceed 15 Amps. I've seen posts where people though they can plug about 5 Amps into each outlet on the classic and they'd be golden; clearly not the case.

So, if you plug about 700W into outlet #1 and 700 Watts into outlet #2, there isn't much more equipment you can plug into remaining outlets before that strip trips.

Very well put. And as a matter of fact that is the exact light that I am using haha, well only the 4 bulb.... so maybe I should put this extra money into getting a dedicated (15 or 20 amp?) circuit?

First thing I pictured was a wire cutter amd a roll of electrical tape :)

That’s me. Lol. No I use 3 power strips and every plug is used. I’m thinking about buying a really long one n plugging everything into one but then I worry about over loading the socket it’s plugged into

I have found that I can overload an outlet on the apex powerbar. For instance my chiller includes the chiller pump and together that exceed the limit of the outlet. I rigged ui a 120v relay where the relay is switched by the apex and the contacts for the relay are wired into a wall outlet (20A) so I can switch on up to a 20A load off 1 outlet on the apex 832 energy bar. The relay coil only draws milliamps off the energy bar. You could do the same but instead of driving a chiller, drive an outlet strip.

Always happens, accumulation of stuff that needs outlets. I have the 2016 apex, so only 8 outlets. For example I have 4 mp40s, What I was thinking I could do is plug 2 of my mp40s in one outlet, so two outlets gone. I have the skimz sm251, has two pumps, so both in one outlet. Can I just double up outlets like that? Or is that not wise, should I just bite the bullet and buy another eb32?

Build a breakout box to 6 two-way switches and you can add 6 more controllable outlets. Is anything 1-10V or 24v DC. If so, you have 4 1-10s and 2 24v switches you can control as well.

I'm running 3 AI Hydra 26 HD on one EB832 outlet, 2 200W heaters on another, 2 MP40 powerheads plus a Gyre on a third, an ozonizer plus its air pump on a fourth, and a sump light plus backup battery charger on a fifth. Return pump, skimmer and reactor each have their own. No problems at all with any of it as far as the Apex is concerned. I recently bought an EB4 to give myself a bit of elbow room. I prefer the EB4 over the EB8 because, like the EB832, it's all mechanical relays and no TRIACs.

Even Russ acknowledges that plugging the power supplies of your variable speed devices into an EB does no harm (it just wastes an outlet, in his opinion). I personally like having the two points of control, power input and variable output, for these devices on my Apex dashboard, so I do plug pumps, etc into the EB. If I run out of room, I just buy another EB, no big deal. Also, the newer Hydra HDs don't work with the AWM module, so they need to be plugged into an EB if you want to control them at all with the Apex. And, my DOS and ATK plug directly into the 24V ports on the EB; their individual power supplies aren't used at all.

You could buy a used EB-8 I have 48 outlets on my apex. Slowly added onto over the last four years.

1. All mp 40s
2. Heater
3. Both skimmer outlets - swabbie will be extension for this. So no worries
4. Return pump , algae scrubber.
5. Doser
6. Lights
7. Feeder
8. Swabbie

Don’t connect to apex.
1. Tablet.
2. Feeder
3.

Good luck
Don't plug the Vortechs into EB8, hook directly to wall and control with a wxm

Tie the skimmers together with a splitter.

You can also get away with running 1 reactor or scrubber on an outlet with a main pump.

Do not tie Heaters together, run each one on a relay outlets.

Do not plug the feeder into eb8, run it off aquabus.

Running hydra on eb8 is also a waste of outlets.

What kind of Doser? A DOS should also not be in an EB8

Don't put the tablet on the controller and a gyre has its on controller, that's a waste of an outlet.

You will need a dedicated outlet for that avast swabbie though.

Instead of putting any additional money into power strips, splitters etc. I'd just put the money towards a new eb832 or a used eb8 ( its still compatable with 2016 Apex ).
