Ich!!!

At the time I had a purple Firefish and tailspot blennie as well that never got it. I believe because of the garlic.

I wonder what would happen if you mixed both garlic and ginger? ;)

I think this is the best solution, based on empirical evidence. ginger and garlic, hack maybe we should add and onion just to be safe. sounds like we are on our way to fish curry!!! yum. might have to make that for dinner!

Try putting slice of ginger root inside ur tank and mix some ginger power on their food!!
Works for me!

why are you suggesting this? what evidence or information do you have to suggest this to people?
please define, "works for me!". are you implying that you have cured or are managing your ick with ginger slices?

to the OP: please listen to tried and TRUE advice, not some mythical, unsupported, ineffective folk remedy. Dont get me wrong, im all for natural/og solutions, but garlic and ginger are not solutions to this problem. the ONLY way you are going to cure/eradicate ich, is to remove your fish from the tank and treat them with either copper or TTM. You will also need to leave the tank fallow for a period of 70+ days to allow the ich to go through its life cycle and die off in your DT.

Just my 2 cents on garlic, ginger and other unorthodox methods for treating ich: Over on RC, there is a huge thread about using ginger to treat ich. There are countless threads on garlic. The results are inconclusive; some say it worked for them, others tried it and say it failed.

However, if you truly believe ginger works to eradicate ich this is what I think you should do: Setup a bare bottom, rockless QT. This basic environment will eliminate many of the X factors which could taint your experiment. Go buy a fish with ich, drop him in your QT, and start using ginger, garlic, whatever. (Petco is a great source for ich infested fish, and sometimes you can even get a great deal on one showing visible symptoms.)

Document/photograph all your progress. Keep the fish in QT for 2-3 months just to be sure. If your method works, start a thread outlining everything. It will never be accepted by the scientific community, but it will lend weight to your theory through anecdotal evidence.

Agreed +100!

additionally, theres this:

So, not too sure why s/he is even recommending ginger/garlic or any treatment, while also looking for info!!

Thanks for all the post!! Here's an update: looks like my royal gramma is trying to fight it off. Woke up the next day and it was off. Only one or two spots on the clowns. I bought some anti parasite caviar to feed them in the mean time. Even though it's cleared up right now I've come to understood that I do need to remove them if I want to get rid of the problem [emoji30]. I have a 30 ga tank I can turn into a hospital tank but I need some help! Does it have to cycle ? And can the filter be a simple filtration that comes with the Marineland tanks?

I heard the heart of a porcupine cures ich. *sarcastic voice*

Ok question... Instead of removing the fish can I remove my shrimps and snails and the 3 corals I have and treat the display tank?

There are no articles out there that I can find about ginger curing Ich. There are studies out there about how ginger affects the immune system and in turn makes the fish more resistant to Ich. I can't find anything that supports adding it to the tank, only ones where they added it to the diet.

Any views on this?? I only have a few new drags that I could easily remove. Can u treat the tank ?? Or does the copper always stay in the water?

Also would it hurt my live rock?

I would only attempt hypo on a DT. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Copper or CP will get absorbed into the rock/substrate, and that will make it very difficult for you to ever put corals/inverts in there again.

Maybe bake some fish cookies using ginger? ;) In my 35 years of saltwater experience, I've never tried that. ;););)
