I think its funny that there are approximately 212 people are viewing this thread looking for a guide for coral placement that isnt posted in the first post as I thought there would be one.

PAR will be important. Additionally, one must know which do and don’t sting surrounding corals and which desire certain lighting, flow, location (high/low) and which have speciy requirements sut as alk, ca, iron etc.
My tank has an lps region and opposite is SPS island with meaty corals in center and all Montis in another area

Ok so there is obviously a desire for this but few people contributing. I’m just a reef noob looking for direction too.

Tidal gardens is good. His voice is sooooo calming I sometimes use him to fall off to sleep while rewatching his vids. Bc on first pass I am taking notes ..bwahahaha

I think that this topic is avoided because there isn't an end all be all for a coral. You can take a coral, split it and put it in 2 similar tanks and the color, growth, PE or even survival would differ.

I was over Bill's house today and he took a milli from his main display and put it in his frag tank, that shares the same water as well as the exact lighting and the milli is a completely different color.

Basic guidelines is all you can hope for and you have to experiment within your tank.

A good guideline for adding a new coral to your tank is to acclimate it slowly, put them in a lower par and raise them up over the course of a few weeks.

Aside from lighting the water chemistry will have to be in the range of NSW and adjust accordingly as well.

Bottom line, your mileage may vary.

His name is Than and Tidal Gardens is 12 mins from my house :) He is open to the public but by appointment only. When I was finally ready for my first pieces of coral i made an appointment and went to check it all out...I was not disappointed his voice was just as soothing while your wallet is open and your making decisions on what to buy. He never once made me feel stupid even though Im sure i was acting like a fan boy fawning all over him..if you had the thought that Than seems like a nice guy I can assure you ..he is!

Other soothing voices I like to warch in no particular order...Mochi from Inappropriate reefer, Aarons Aquariums although iirc his name is not aaron, and George from coralfish12g .

That is so good to hear. I once visited BRS unannounced and they were so accommodating took me on a tour answered my fanboy questions and I even met Randy. The hobby is full of cool people so nice to see! Thanks for the feedback.

Aaaaaah, yeah there is..... if you Google your coral and research at what DEPTH do they thrive at in the wild. That will tell you the amount of light and flow they grow in nature.

Shallow depths generally mean high light, high flow. The farther you go down in depth the lower the PAR, the lower the flow

So knowing the corals natural DEPTH IS EVERYTHING

Generally speaking, veeeery generally

Sps = high PAR light, high flow. Exception would be plating montipora which need lower light. Your Google search will tell you that montipora thrive in deeper depths

Lps = depends on coral species but generally moderate PAR light, moderate flow

Zoas, palys, anemones, mushrooms, softies, anything with soft tissue and NO hard coral skeleton = low PAR light, low flow

Then there are clams which are weird little dudes = high PAR light, low flow

I would recommend checking out established reefs in the members tanks section of the forum to get a idea where people are placing different corals and although we are still gathering data our Par Database may be useful for determining light levels for different corals..
