Ok so there is obviously a desire for this but few people contributing. I’m just a reef noob looking for direction too.

Please dont take that the wrong way. I was just trying to make a joke. And I know there are many people wondering the same.

I think it just varies so much depending on where the coral came from. Sometimes a coral can be acclimated to more intense lighting and when you use softer lighting you will see the difference and vice versa. Same thing with flow. Corals can get use to a particular flow in someone's tank but when you try to place it in the "proper" area it will reflect.

Sps- H light H indirect flow
LPs- M Light M-H indirect flow
Soft- variable light and flow

There is NO idiot proof guide to coral placement. Every tank is different. Flow, lighting (affected by aquascape), chemical composition, ect. I recently transferred tanks and had a large torch colony not fully extended. I moved the wave maker (ecotech 40) a quarter inch away and now it is perfect. Best way is to observe and modify as needed in my opinion.

My euphylia (splatter hammer and 2 heads of indo green tip torch) won't extent. All parameters are fantastic, so I'm guessing flow/light issue. Any ideas?

It could be related to flow,parasites or possibly a fish picking at it.

this accurately reflects my experience also
trial and error and eventually you will find a spot that the coral appears happiest in

new corals, I do like to start them all low or on sand bed and then after a few days , move them to the location I would like them in.

My frogspawn and hammer was not extending. Tried lights up and down. Chemistry adjustments. Then read about flow. So I increased and created a wave one way for 45 seconds and reversed for 30 seconds. They opened within two days. Then one day I looked and they were back to half extended. Turned out my ice cap 3000 stopped. Cleaned the ice cap and the flow was restablished and the frogspawn and hammer extended, plus, they are growing in size.

This is a great post - more people need to be measuring par for this exact reason. You start to understand what works for different types of corals in your tank - not someone else’s.
