Corals turn white and don't open. Polyps open for one day and never open again

Sounds like you are bleaching your corals. Where are you putting them, what kind of corals are you adding, what is the footprint of your tank, in inches, and how many lights do you have over it?

I think aquarium water testing charges $45-50 for 1 series of tests.

If you have cyano than you do have no3. Its just absorbing it making your tests read 0.

I still wouldnt rule out copper...

Just my. 02
Do any of the dead skeletons turn blue/green?

I had a similar problem. Do you have any rock that is not "fugi" type live rock? I had some river rock and it was apparently leaching some heavy metals or something. I made two changes, one - I removed all the river rock, two - I started a heavy feed campaign to pump up the nourishment level. My zoa would open once then melt. I could not keep snails or shrimp. Now everything I put in my tank loves it.

There are several of us now that do the heavy feed thing. It takes a few weeks to get there because you have to increase the volume of food in very small increments to let the bacteria count keep up.. The down side is you must feed the tank or you will have a bacteria die off and crash the tank.

EDIT: ditto this post for the wrong kind of sand... it could cause exactly the same problem.

get all new test kits make sure they not expired and test again use the new red sea or salifert then u will see some things r way off i would reduce the led to 50% -60% also try a poly filter the one that will change different color if theres metals amonia harmful organics in the water see if that helps double check the salnity with a good refractometer those things go bad over time .

I've got 100% Marco sand and rock
I'm off to the store to buy all new tests. Including copper. I'm interested in the heavy feeding campaign is there a link to that thred.
I aprishiated everyone's input!

A refractometer can go bad? I'd like to know more about that.

I have had a similar issue. I never found out what was wrong, tagging along to see if you get an answer. Best of luck.

Get yourself a Polypad while at the store. Corals are extremely sensitive to copper, much more sensitive than test kits are. Toss the pad in your sump for about 24 hours. If it turns the color of Listerene, that's copper.

Refractometers don't go bad as far as I know but they will get out of calibration and need to be calibrated again.

HO2 said in the post I quoted they go bad... I think .. that is how I read it. I have no idea what could go bad with a tube and an adjustable refraction plate.

If you are doing everything right, then the corals will live/thrive, period....So the only explanation has to be something oddball.....noxious fumes from paint cans, an uncle that smokes 20 cigars a day next to the tank....???????????? Hope u figure it out.:hat:

Ok
Salinity 025
Po4 .08
Cal 425
Kh 8.7
Copper 0
Nitrate 0 with my old test
1.5 ppm with new test !

I added a poly filter after test

Po4 fyi @ po4- .03 coral growth will stop.
Do you run gfo? Maybe time to start/replace. Or some serious water changes. Check overflow, exit pipes for algea

I think I'll start mixing some water and fire up the gfo reactor
I hope it's this simple

You may want to do a little more research, corals will definitely grow with phosphates over. 03!
