I understand the need for ATO; it helps prevent fluctuation in SG. What I don't understand is the elaborate ATO systems. I keep a 5 gallon water cooler jug with top off water off to the side at a level higher than the sump. Then I just us a good, old - fashioned siphon to a float valve in the sump. 24 bucks.

That's a great idea! I won't be able to use gravity in this case though since it will just be sitting on my desk at work. Either way there are risks involved too. I would also probably limit it to like one gallon so that way when your flat valve inevitably fails you only have one gallon of water on the floor. Mine also had a built in alarm if it gets overflowed.

I love the tank. I've got a 5 gallon with a semi-aggressive clown fish. How do you think the pistol and goby combination would work out? What do you feed the goby?

I think it would work fine. Though I'm not sure the clown fish will be extremely happy in a five gallon. The shrimp rarely leaves his cave. The goby never leaves the entrance to the cave so should be ok.

Thanks for the response. I've had the clown in this size tank since he was a little guy. He seems happy and healthy. He eats like a pig. If he gets any signs of being unhappy I'll gladly transfer him to my friends 200+ gallon reef. I've got an anemone that he is hosting too and if that guy gets too big I may ship them both off to the 200.

For the hosting part, try putting some pictures of clowns in anemones taped to the side of the tank. This has worked for me both times I tried it. It took about a day or two both times. What do you feed the goby? I'm concerned that because of the size of my tank I don't have enough pods to support him. I was thinking a watchman goby. Do those eat frozen food, typically?

Oh sorry, ya he just eats the same thing I feed everything else: new life spectrum .5mm pellets. He also readily accepts the mysis as well. Thanks for the tip concerning the clowns. I'll try it out.

When I was researching I found some people say a tail spot blenny would probably do well in a pico. My yellow clown goby is just right for this size IMO. When I looked at clown gobies though I saw it really made a difference what color you got since they all get different sizes and have different temperaments. Shrimp gobies seem to be a good choice too since they wouldn't make use of the water space anyways. Honestly now that I've had it going for a little bit I'm considering adding another yellow clown goby. Cute little guys.

Recently, my friend was looking into an AIO tank. I talked them out of it. My feeling was that they are very proprietary, and, if something broke down in a few years, what would you do for replacement parts if the company went out of business? In the end, I built this...

That looks great! My little 3.7G pico is AIO and I don't even use anything that came with it in the "sump" area. Since it is so small I just put small bags of carbon, matrix, and purigen where there will be water flowing. On top I put some filter floss. I also replaced the pump it came with.

I would argue that having an actual sump on a tank less than 10G may be counter intuitive. Where you are trying to have a small tank for a desk or bookshelf.

On my JBJ 45 AIO I think the only things that couldn't be replaced with genetic stuff would be the media racks. I know some people make replacements. I guess I could always make new ones if they stop making them.

It hasn't been up and running for too long so it's hard to tell for sure. I can say that my zoas are thriving (an extra head already) on the bottom. My scroll coral looks happy, my acans are growing out a little, and my pocillopora looks really good. The others have just been added. Only one coral hasn't done well and I don't even know what it is lol.

Well I made a screen top for it. I also mounted all the corals. It's finished for now. Haven't had any more issues. I might get a couple more sexy shrimp. Otherwise it's ready to go to my desk at the office.

Also, the thing on top is my autofeeder. Since I travel occasionally I needed to make sure the tank can care for itself for up to two weeks.
