I just picked up a IM 16 today. Probably set it up over the next few days. What does everyone use for media? Do you use the media blocks that IM sells? Or do u guys use other stuff??

Look at intank media baskets for it.

I have the baskets, I'm just curious if everyone actually uses the IM blocks that come with it, or do they use other products?

Hi Sobo,
I found that the stock filtration gets clogged really quickly because sediments settle on the very top layer and cause the media basket to over flow with water defeating the purpose of the media. You could wash the sponges but, especially the green one will lose the activated carbon and other chemicals in the blocks. What I do is buy a large activated carbon pad (like this one Amazon.com : Deep Blue Professional ADB41002 Super Activated Carbon Media Pad, 18 by 10-Inch : Aquarium Filter Accessories : Pet Supplies), ask at your lfs, i got a 2 foot by one foot section for 6 bucks at mine, and cut it to size. It is only about half an inch thick so water will trickle down. I replace mine about every 2 weeks and i can get about a 2 and a half dozen or so cut for the IM 24 baskets. So 6 bucks lasts me a month and a half give or take and the carbon is always new instead of rinsing the blocks. Of coarse as Awpeacock said you could use virtual and media. You may also consider a custom basket for a fuge. Cool but expensive and not necessary.

Thanks for that, I'll look into it! I was just at my LFS too! Lol I just set it up today. I have the regular media in one tray, and then a bag of chemipure and some ceramic bio media in there along with some rubble rock

I think that the stock pump is enough for filtration. I have it at half the power, because anything over that makes the water flow over the media basket. Even with the upgraded basket this happens, which is what I have. With that said, it is not enough flow for the display. For those reasons I installed a jebao WP10 inside the display and this gives me the necessary flow. The WP 10 has a very small foot print, so it doesn't look terrible. BUT, I would get the jebao RW4, which some claim is smaller and more controllable than the WP10. The RW4 is the upgrade to the WP10. Cheers.
