When I first bought it

After a month and a half in my tank...

I'm sure it's a valida, and it's really nice. But is it a purple monster? Maybe I got lucky

What color are the polyps? They look green in the pic but it may just be my laptop. Also looks similar to a 20K or 30k lokani but hard to tell since it is still small. The 20k and 30k lokani have white polyps though. Where did you pick it up? If you didn't buy it as a PM, I would say no, but never say never. I know the PM is a painfully slow grower...

Yup, that looks like a tyree PM. That doesn't look similar to a 20k/30k lokani. Those lokani's have really really thin branches. Where did you buy it? Why not ask the place or person you bought it from what it is exactly.

I bought it from Tina at wetthumbfrags from a frag swap. She said she didn't know what it was, she just got it "from her husband's collection". :D

The polyps are a light green.

Well coming from that collection, you may have gotten lucky...lol. I think only time will tell. Regardless, it's a nice looking piece!

I'm gonna say no for a few things. One the polyps are not the right color, two mine is alot bulker then that the branches are very thin compaired to mine. Lastly you say maybe you got luckey. If you did not buy it as a purple monster with linage or from a creditable source its a no. Just because it may look like somthing in some cases does not mean it is that.

In that case it might be but your still gonna have to wait for it to grow out to tel, but like i said i think the branches are still a tad bit thin. If it growss S_L_O_W it is most likly the PM, mine grows very litte but ive only had mine for 5 months and it mostly just encrusts.

Darn! It isn't it. Hehe I payed 20 bucks or something like that for it, so I'm still happy :D

It's getting this awesome color... kinda smokey, alien-like.

I will name it LE Purple Beast

Polyp color looks about right to me. Mine are primarily white but some of the polyps farther from the axial polyps can take on a green sheen under high K lighting. $20 is a steal regardless.

Now that mine's reached about 4" it is growing at a decent rate (relatively speaking, of course LOL)

are the polyps white or green?

They are light green, but some of them are white... when I first got it the polyps were pretty green, and now they are getting lighter and lighter.

it's about 20" under a 250w EVC 20k on an Icecap ballast.

The pm can have green or white polyps. Looks a lot like it to me.

Awesome droblack!

I just looked at some threads and pics, and I think this is it... SWEET :D

i thought they were white, but i dont have a piece of it so im no expert on it! very nice though either way you got a deal.

Its a hard coral to ID as a frag. Its the same species I would say. On the other hand Tyree states that the Purple Monster is a Valida. Myself along with MANY other disagree about the species.
Give it a little time and I think that you will have a better idea. You will know because it will be about the same size 6 months from now...

I don't think it is a valida either, and it seems different from all of the lokanis I know.
