Normal undergravel pulls the water down through the substrate. Causes all your detritus and stuff to accumulate under the plastic.
Instead you push the water down the tubes and it comes up through the substrate. Keeps detritus suspended so that your HOB filter can effectively remove it.

Ok so then hook up a pump of some sort to push water down through the tubes?

My powerheads have a forward and reverse. I'll put them on the lift tubes and throw them in reverse to push rather than pull water

what pumps are you using? do they still make the aqua clear reverseable's
These are what I an using. Love them for this type of thing. I'm using the 50's. Only the 50's and 70's have the reverse feature.

Yes. I have 1 802 and 1 402 left in storage as well. I have these 50s on the tank the Yellow tang is chilling in
