Jonas Roman sps-tank

I'm interested in knowing more about your KH tester!

Very awesome tank. I also run the lx7102 with my tank and so far I think it's a great fixture.

Thank you so much:_)

My KH machine is presented here at reef2reef at:
https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/announcement-my-own-builded-kh-machine-is-ready.278352/page-9

We (me and Focustronic) are in this moment working to make a commercial product for all of you, releasing as soon as possible. We are at this moment constructing the prototype before the final commercial version:-)

Now already after a few days with ramping up my light, my dKH consumption seems to increase due to the new light:)
Here is some rather constant values recorded by my automatic KH-measure-machine. Actually I think it is ok to be some below 8.0, so I will alter my reference value in the machine before I let it fine-tune my dKH values. The coloration has increased since the new light also. Beautiful tank Jonas;)

Happy midsummer from Sweden

At the moment no isses or problems at all with the tank. That is a seldom situation;-)

Congratulations Jonas. You have a terrific tank and it really looks awesome.

I would like to ask for some advice from you. I have a DIY LED light on top of my 500 l tank (90% SPS, mostly Acropora and Stylophora). The LEDs are four and half years old and I believe the PAR is decreasing. Besides that some of the lenses fall down from time to time and is a pain on the neck to glue them again on place. I am thinking about switching to a Mitras LX 7200 and my doubt is whether 3 fixtures would be OK. What do you think would be the best arrangement, perpendicular to the length of the tank or parallel?

Thank a lot for your help. By the way, I'm also following your KH monitor which I think would be very very helpful.

I would go for at least one more module than GHL recommend, as I think the light is not so bright as you at a first glance may believe. They have a lot of white diods, which makes the PAR difficult to compare with other PAR, as it is the PUR which is of interest. So I guess that some of the PAR from this light is only esthetic, as it is quite a lot of white diods(which gives some light(yellow) outside PUR-area).
So, I have 4 units, with the short side of the unit against you, and I will definitely recommend that, and thus go for at least one more unit than you at a first glance think. I actually consider buy a fifth!, as I also see that there is quite obvious difference of PAR and PUR already 5 cm outside the unit. Despite no lenses, there is a distinct difference of the corals which is exactly below or just a little to the side. So the spread is not so good, but I think that is same for Radion and Hydra also.

I think, but do not know, but shall do measures when getting a PAR and PUR device, that the PAR is equal to Radion but that GHL has a little lower PUR, and we all know that it is the PUR which is of interest.
The software of the Mitrax is not perfect, I think the Radion´s software is more thoroughly worked, and more pedagogic. But that is no big issues, as long as everything works, and it does. The light gives a beautiful light, and after the update, no issues or bugs. It is petty that I can not control them by iPhone, and not by MAC...so it is some complicated to take my old PC every time. Also the wifi part does not work perfect, I have to reconnect every time so I have loosed my patience there and go for usb now.
The appearance is nice, very beautiful lamps, even if that is not so important as the biological effect. Concerning biological effect, if we forget that they are not so bright, is good, with good coloration and absolutely no shadowing or disco effect.

I do not know the measures of your tank, but 500 litres sounds that you have at least 1.5 m in length? I should go for 4 units in that case and place them with short side against you.

I do not like the custom made mounting options. I bought 4 Alu-profiles. Only 2 wires from the roof and the units hang in the M4 crews and you can move them back and forth:) Total cost of this also very beautiful solution was 30 euro.

Jonas, thanks a lot for your reponse, very well reasoned. You guessed well. My tank is 150 cm long and 60 cm wide.? I also think that the orientation you suggest is the best one. The only problem is that they are expensive fixtures. GHL recommends 2 for a tank like mine, but I believe that 3 would be a more realistic calculation. A fourth one would mean almost 900 € more. I have to think about it.
Also, your mounting option looks like the right one, unless you want a jungle of wires coming from the ceiling.
I think GHL has achieved a nice light spreading with those reflectors, but at the cost of reducing light intensity (to increase this you would need lenses). Phillips went the same way with the Coralcare.

2 units are according to my opinion too little, I should actually say 4 if you are seeking high end sps-tank, but for sure you can start with 3, that will be ok, and it is easy to upgrade in future. I agree, high costs. It´s a malign development of the hobby to have to spend 3000 Euro for proper light (sps). In the back days, a high end light fixture never cost more than 800 euro for a whole tank. The problem is not the cost for each unit, that is reasonable, BUT that these all units have so bad coverage (even without lenses) so you have to by so many units, and that there is not so many units in market with more units in one (should be more cost-effective). We have a problem to solve, the coverage issue (and you know that Focustronic have solved this, first out with moving lights!, me like). I think you are correct, spot on, concerning the lack of lenses as cause of not so bright light. And in some way, that is not possible to 100% compensate with more fixtures, I think. I must admit, I am not sure I would have choosen GHL if I could turn the clock back, but I am not disappointed, not at all, just saying that I think I would get one step more out of the light with equal amount if Radion. And if I had to choose today, I would test Focustronic. In that part I am of course a little biased, as I work with them. That is the most honest to admit, but I really think that their idea is interesting and brilliant. But, I will absolutely not force you into my thoughts too much. If you feel for Mitrax, go for it, you shall decide. But in that case, at least 3 units.

/Jonas

Now you have my interest for the Focustronic. I'll read more about it and analyze how it works. I'm not in hurry to switch as my DIY fixture works, so I have time to make a decision.

Good decision to not hurry and investigate all alternatives:-)
Would be happy to be informed your further thoughts:-)

Hi Jonas: first of all congratulations for the development and achievement of Alkatronic. I'm sure your machine is going to have a great success and I'll be following its arrival to Spain. Right now I'm figuring out how to squeeze it in my already full tank cabinet, but I'll come out with something, for sure.

I finally decided to buy three Mitras LX 7200 and I have been busy the last weeks figuring out a system to hang them over the tank and mock trying the units (programming is way sophisticated!). Now everything is ready and as soon as I have one or two days (hopefully this weekend) I'll replace my old DIY fixture over the tank. I'm really excited about the new appearance of my tank. By the way, I took advantage of the light composer program you developed and uploaded to the GHL web, adapting it to my illumination schedule. Thanks for that, too.

One of the things I'm excited about is to have a photo dedicated illumination program easy to switch on, therefore being able to take (at last!) good pictures of my tank without the need to follow a master in photography. I promise some as soon as I get them.

Again, thanks for your advice and wise discussion.

Yup I am going to be that person that ask to see another image of that stunning tank. :D
