I have seen initial phase males for sale for $85, but at that stage, not even close.

So I bought this little guy as a "misc. wrasse". I'm thinking Tonos Fairy but I'm not sure. He's still pretty camera shy but I managed to get a halfway descent pic. What do you think?

Looks like a Cirrhilabrus rubriventralis to me.

Neither C. lanceolatus or cf. lanceolatus, but instead C. roseafascia. It is more similar to lanceolatus in size and temperament, just not as rare.

It's not a hog, it is a Cheilinus species, most likely C. orientalis, but could be species 1 as well.

Exactly; roseafascia. If it was lanceolatus, you would have paid four figures.

What was the give away? I read descriptions but all they do is confuse me... Haha

The fact you were unsure is a good indication... haha.

But the real tell-tale between the two are the spots on the pelvic fins. Lanceolatus has the dark spots at the anterior edges.

Yup. I acquired my H. richmondi from a local store labeled as a melanurus.
