Let Me ID Your Wrasse!

Sorry; I didn't mean to come off as rude or pointed. I simply hate to see people get wrong IDs on a thread which strives to exist so users can get correct IDs.

i had attempted to construct my post so anyone reading knew it was a layman’s answer, mainly was answering for the OP’s question if it was reef safe which i could answer, perhaps could instead when unsure ask how you came to your specific ID.

Grows to ~5", relatively mild in temperament. Good species.

Saw this beauty today. Was labeled as Delores wrasse. Pet shop said it was some sort of pencil wrasse. Looking for correct ID and any information you could give.

Ha! Best lost in translation I've heard in a while! "Royal Pencil" Pseudojuloides severnsi.

I bought this fairy wrasse off LA DD about a year ago as an Australian C. beauperryi. The more I look at reference books and articles, the more unsure I am. It is a large wrasse (5 inches+), mostly grey, no punctatus-style spots that I can make out, red in the dorsal and anal fins, green tail, and very long ventral fins. Concave forehead. I think it is a color morph of either beauperryi or punctatus, but cannot seem to find a good reference picture to match.

It's C. punctatus. The spots are hard to keep on them.

Yes. And those two species both occur there, and they're close cousins. So a reasonable mix up.

I have looked at quite a few pictures and was still not sure so I can see how they would be easily confused, especially with if their color had faded. Not the most colorful wrasse, but I like the shape and the red and green accents. Thanks!!!

Definitely something in the temminckii complex. It's probably temminckii, but I cannot be certain just yet.
