I have never ever ran a chiller on my tank. In the 10 years my aquarium has been set up. My tank is on the second floor in my home, and it gets quite hot in the summer time in Colorado.

I run a 4 bulb fixture from Home Depot LOL
It’s been running for 3 1/2 years now! Corals love it only cost me 90 bucks minus bulbs. I had a kessil that I added to my tank for my sps, about 6 months ago! But I’ve always used T5HO

I have seen some fixtures that are decent at depot.
I would be worried about the salt creap and stuff like that.
Hows it hold to that?

Mine looks brand new! It’s also mounted 8 inches of the water and I have plenty of turn over, 90x turn over in my 75 so the water is moving.

Then you're not gonna have the best light system/temp. to offer to your anemone.
And, again, depending on where you live, you still gonna need a chiller for anemones with LEDs!
I had to run chiller when I had my LEDs over the tank. Just like my T5s.
For the halides it would work more, but the chiller is needed anyway here.

If you need a chiller for T5s you'll probably need same chiller for the LEDs.
It depends where you live!

I shouldint need a chiller at all. My system jumps less then a degree tgrew a whole day with all my equipment running and with people in the house.
Maybe with a halid but i dought with anything else. Plus it will be an open top with a fan above it any way.

Ok, just make sure you have a stable temperature for the anemones and I would keep at 77°F, I guess. Important to keep stable is what everyone says too. That's why many use chillers and heaters, if they need.

Leds seems absolutely perfect for this system with not having any shading issues to worry about. Although you already have hydra 26 and kessil those would be my choices personally although my dream light is orphek v4, it’s really not needed here but might be fun to play with.

I’m not a t5 or halide guy despite running them for years although. For sps it makes a lot of sense to use a hybrid t5/led vs covering the entire surface with leds but I digress, LEDs are going to be fantastic on this system.

I’m setting up a 29 gallon anemone tank with clowns. Same dimensions and going to use a Kessil A80 tuna blue ($130). I have an A80 over a 20 gallon and it’s maintaining SPS.

I’m not sure about you guys, but the cost for t5 bulbs once a year is not expensive... I have dropped 3x that on a coral frag. And fish alone. Nothing in this hobby is cheap. And led is very expensive initially. And they will not last forever either. Eventually you will need to replace. I’m not saying led is not good, but on my tank I had to go back to t5HO, my anemones hated and I mean hated LED. I even went through an acclimation phase slowly ramping up the whole 9 yards. Wasn’t impressed. If you going to do led I strongly recommend supplementing with an alternative light source such as T5, PC, or halide.

I have an 160we on my 15 gallon zoa tank lol

Yeah i think im going to go LED.
I wont need to build a canopy if i keep it low enough on the tank.
I have hydra and kessils on other tank so tyats kinda what i was thinking with this tank.

LED’s have no problem growing Anemones. You will find, and have found, that their are a few guys that are not LED fans. And that’s fine. But that shouldn’t deter you from going LED if you so choose to do. I currently and running a cheaper LED (Current USA) and have excellent growth and coloration out of my Anemones. I have 3 in my reef. One is 7” across and the other 2 or 3” (Clones). I like Kessils a lot but if you have the Hydra, then go for it. You won’t be let down. Can’t wait to see the results!

Do you have a controller for kessil already? If not you could consider getting one! Gave me a whole lot more control! Ps anemone tanks are bad butt!

It’s a great thing that we have so many options in the hobby now! Great example here, I simply just dislike how T5 look, cost isn’t even remotely a factor. But that’s just me, and it’s all good whatever someone likes.

It is unfortunate you didn’t have good experience with LED though. Here was my led system solely with hydra 26 and acro growth. I don’t have any pics handy of rose nems under the same lights but they worked well for me with bta too. At this point if I have issues with a system I can be pretty sure it’s not the lighting.

It’s all about the right bulb combo, I’m not arguing against LED. Everyone seems to jump on them like there hot cakes. I’ll stick with tried and true. Don’t forget I am running a kessil. I won’t use a single light source . I will always do a mixture.

And thats MHO,
For a 29 if cost isn’t a factor why not run both? There really is no need to discredit one light type over another, just sharing my experience that my anemones didn’t like just led.

I’m getting explosive growth and color with a combo and good health. After all that’s what we all aim to achieve! Truly it’s in the eye of the beholder!
