Lps Disaster

Okay I have a new question..... my monti completely died the whole coral turned bright white.. I just looked at it today and the edges looks like it's getting brown not sure if it's algae or it's coming back to life. What do you guys think?

Montis are a good indicator of alk swings, my monti cap starts to slightly bleach when there is barely an alk swing in my tank. You should not only check parameters before you do a water change but you should also check the day after. I would recommend checking alk several times a week and cal at least once a week. Have you tested the water you are using for your water change prior to changing, it should match very close like +/- .2 dkh and +/- 10 ppm of cal.

Are you purchasing pre-mixed saltwater or are you mixing yourself? Either way you should test salinity, Alk, Cal, and mag of the water you are using for your water change, those parameters should match very closely to the water in your tank. Water changes are to add depleted trace elements and remove waste/contaminants. If you are mixing your own salt water what are you using for your source water, tap, bottled, or RODI? If you keep doing water changes and the parameters do not match your tank water you are only further throwing the balace of your Alk and Cal. Also are you running carbon, if so when was the last time you changed it? When i notice an issue with a coral i do a list of things to see what the issue is and i do all of my list. 1 test parameters alk, cal, mag, and salinity. 2 change carbon and any mechanical filtration. 3 a 10% water change, or more, with with water that has matching parameters to my existing tank water. If my alk or cal parameters were off during this process i adjust the timer on my dosing pumps to slowly bring the parameter that was off back to where ot needs to be over a few days. Usually within a week my coral will mend its self.

One thing i have learned with my tank is testing regularly lets me be proactive as opposed to being reactive.
My water comes from a water store where i can purchase by the gallons and that water is filtered by many many filters chemical free approved by the fda, California's state law, human resources and what not my point is the water I buy is safe... I do mix my own water I use reef crystals and always and i mean always matches my tank water... I only dose when something is low

I'm not new to this hobbie ...5+ years my only questions were 1 what the heck happened to my lps and 2 is my dead monti coming back or is it algae..

Am at a loss, do you have a local fish store you could purchase rodi water from? Might be worth a shot, possibly the water you are getting has some minerals or heavy metals in it. I know a lot of drinking water is safe for human consumption but that does not mean it is 100% pure. Definitely run some fresh carbon it will help remove any toxin that may have been introduced to your tank. Hopefully somone on here with more knowledge of the hobby then me can help pinpoint the issue, im definitely following.
