Hey luke, How are your overflows set up? A goby out of all fish should not be making his way to your sump, especially because they are a bottom resident. I'm also worried about your firefish. These fish are jumpers and if you are not seeing it, there is a good chance he made a leap or followed the fate of your goby. Can you take a pic of your overflow set up? may have some words of advice for it

I've got a coast to coast style internal weir with bean animal over flows.

The tank is on it's side while I was adding the over flow.

being a straight edge without cut out riffles makes it easier for fish to ride the wave up and over the overflow. If you can, i would invest in some screen or something similar with large holes in it to line the top edge. Something that debree can flow through, but will keep your fish in. If nothing is done, i'm afraid you might lose others as well. I had the same type of problem back a few years ago. it can especially be a problem when you add new fish that haven't settled in yet and spend time swimming along the edges of the tank looking for a place to hide. Under and around that overflow is a great place.

I'm wondering if the powerhead is creating too much flow. Any recommendations of power heads? I'm leaning towards to Tunze. I'd like something quiet

I have an Aqueon 500 and a Hydor Koralia 240. Can't hear a sound from either over my MaxiJet 900 return pump LOL

I can't help you there. I don't use powerheads. all my flow comes from my return manifold. There has been so much advancement in powerheads since i used them years ago so i have no opinions on the matter. All i can really say is that being a 20g tank, you aren't going to need much to get the water flowing around in there. A small powerhead along with your return line water should be plenty for your setup. Usually if you are not blowing sand around you are alright. The only way i can see losing your fish to your sump because of too much flow would be if your powerhead was blasting water at your overflow creating a strong current that would push them over. Otherwise i still think its the lack of a good setup to block the fish from flowing over it. Have you found your purple yet? Some fish like to swim against a nice current, so not having your top protected could cause them to go with the flow.

The purple firefish is hiding out in the rocks as of 2 days ago.

i'm surprised it hasn't come out. Especially without any other fish in there that will bully it. Maybe hes going through withdrawal and you should pick him up some buddies!

I just took a look at one of your back pictures you posted earlier and i can see your powerhead. It does look way to big for that tank. Maybe your theory is more correct than i thought.

My father-in-law gave it to me, I don't know the rating and the words have worn off the powerhead. The goby came out this morning to eat. I'm going to order a couple small powerheads but I'm torn between hydor and tunze.

My CUC from reefcleaners.org got here today. Great communication and a couple extra if everything I ordered.

I unplugged my powerhead after feeding tonight and I'll see if that helps. I ordered a Korilla Evo 550 today. I may buy a second based on its performance.

The firefish and goby are out eating this morning. I guess turning off the powerhead did the trick. I have a Hydor Korilla 550 on the way. All the snails are spread out eating the film algae.

How's the tank? Any new additions?

Nothing yet. I talked to Lifan at Reefbreeders and the light should ship next week. I ordered 2 power heads and I've got a different skimmer I need to dial in tomorrow.

Replaced one power head this morning and fed some rod's reef. The goby seems to be much happier.

Any idea what the white furry stuff is? I hope it's not hair algae.

I asked about something like that in my tank. Nearest we can figure mine is some type of feather duster. Too early to tell, but hair algae is green.
