Aluminum silicate is a different material with different properties than aluminum oxide (which I tested), but still will dissolve to some extent, just as aluminum oxide does. That said, I've not tested MarinePure, but others with it in their tanks have detected elevated aluminum.

I'm not saying folks cannot use aluminum oxide or aluminum silicate products and have fine tanks.

What I am saying is that aluminum oxide is a source of aluminum, and if you have elevated aluminum or things that have been attributed to aluminum, such as closed leather corals, you might look to aluminum oxide products as a source. I'd also suggest that when you have alternatives, selecting a non-aluminum material may be a better option. :)

It was this information that helped me decide on this. However I don't believe this should be a complete stopping point for the use of it or testing it. The factors have shown it to be in correlation with these blocks however there is to many variables to list it as a cause or completely condemn. Nobody knows certain factors regarding these tanks and maybe we should setup a study to see if different variables along with this pure block would cause it to leech or if it's leeching at all.

Basically imo it's the same as a new TV style . I'm not gonna be the first to buy it . I'm gonna get costumer reviews and let the company work out any kinks. However there is a very simple testing method that could lay this to rest. However I don't know if my wife would feel great about me setting up 4 tanks running different blocks and getting triton results

I'll be honest, I've only heard of two or three other people that run the blocks and also have tested their water and came up with high Al in their water. I'm not ready to point to a correlation yet just off of that. You're right, an ideal scenario would be to set up a controlled experiment but I don't have the time/money/desire to do that.

I will say though that if my result comes back screaming high for Al, for my own personal conclusion, I'll say it clearly leeches Al. That doesn't mean there's even a problem associated with higher Al values yet... Just that the blocks more than likely contribute to higher levels of Al.

Soo if its higher values of Al you still use it ??

If it's not causing any issues... Yes. If I have to add a water change 2x a year to lower the Al values... Then yes as well.

If I have to do monthly water changes... Then heck no! [emoji6]

Sure. If someone wants to do that, great. :)

Wouldnt a dense 4in thick, old school foam filter block do the same thing? Most people stopped useing foam because they were considered to be a nitrate factory. If they were dense enough wouldnt they remove nitrates, like the blocks do?

Interesting. From a standpoint of just physical surface area for bacteria to colonize, I'm sure its similar. I've never used it however.

Let experts chime in for this ..... Very interesting and valid point

If you want to try such a thing, you may want to NOT force the water through it. That will keep the whole thing aerobic, which precludes denitrification.

I am running some of the 1" plates and i must say things in my tank look great i am also running gfo and chaeto. I decided to go with running some of the marine pure because i didnt want to put a couple of hundred pounds of rock in my tank. I have read the threads on the aluminum leaching and also looked at the triton results but one thing is there is a toxic form of aluminum and a non toxic form. The one thing about triton testing and this was pointed out by randy is triton does not differentiate between the two. I personally emailed the manufacturer of marine pure as i had concerns but found i was satisfied with their response i say if your tank is doing good then is it a real issue? The only issue seems to be with lps and softies from what i have read and all of mine are doing great so i dont plan on removing mine of course mine is situated so that water flows over and around it not through it as some have placed in their sumps and no i havent done a triton test although am thinking about it to very test results of some of my testers to see which is the closest to being the most accurate.

What was those guys response ???

What is the problem they have with LPS and Softies ? What corals you have in your tank ?

I think he means the main problem from aluminum has generally been seen with soft corals, especially leather corals. They close up.

I have been using Marine Pure for nearly two years, in a mixed Reef, with SPS, clams, shrimps and softies, including a Toadstool Leather .
However, I have never tested for aluminum.

MP allows me to reduce dramatically the amount of rocks and substrate in the display, save the extra space for growth and still have enough surface area for bacteria to colonise.
I also dose vinegar near the MP blocks, in the sump and that helps to keep the bacteria slime concentrated over there, rather than on the display.

I am very happy with the results and I recommend it to anyone willing to increase surface area.

Cam you show the picture in sump where you have placed it ...
Thank you

Nothing fancy. I got some random sizes from a fellow reefer and I put the balls in bags and in the plastic container.

So basically you have loads of MP balls and 4 blocks ..... Minimalist in display ??

Finally ordered the MP block today ... To start off i have got 1 block and shall be delivered to me soon.
Now the question is
1) where to place it means hii flow or low flow ?
2) rinse it in fresh ro water and place it in tank ? Or does it need some extra care while placing in the tank ?

I rinsed in tap, but rodi is better of corse but all you need to do is rinse any loose dust from in and place in lowest flow possible in ur sump
