Maxspect Gyre - Buyer Beware

Not sure about the serial numbers, maybe CoralVue can help you there. One difference I can see is the original wire is plain black with no rating written on the wire; the new one has the wire rating in white text the full length of the wire.

Gotta check mine. So far it works great, just wanting apex control over it.

Cleaned my Gyre today. The replacement motor wiring is solid. No cracking in the power cable and the insulation is much thicker and higher quality than the original motor cable. IMO I would be surprised if others have problems if they get the newer version.

I have been using a Xf-150 since late January and the cabling has failed close to the powered, YES inside the tank. I am bringing this to everyone's attention because the first unit I received from Dr Fosters arrived with a broken cable close to the power head. I returned that unit and bought another one from my LFS the same day because I needed one ASAP.

It appears the cabling used for this unit is not rated from a saltwater tank. The outer core of the cable has become extremely brittle and starting cracking. The inner cables are now completely exposed and its only a matter of time before the water makes its way to the motor.

I have opened a ticket with CoralVue and will update the thread when they reply. Personally I do not want another Gyre in my tank after seeing the same issue with two units.

I too had this same problem. I purchased two XF150 pumps. The first pump had a power cord failure within a few months and it was dumping electricity in the tank. Coralvue replaced the motor block. This is clearly a design defect in these pumps. The second pump had its power cord fail just this last week. Coralvue told me that its too late and I need purchase a replacement motor block even though the power cord issue is a design defect. I'm very disappointed in Coralvue. These pumps cost $300 and should last longer than 2.5 years.

This is a old thread these problems were fixed along time ago.

I understand and knew the thread was old. The problems were identified but not fixed because there was no recall. There are still pumps in operation that are failing due to the defect. This thread shows up in searches, so I wanted to contribute to it since my comments were on topic, so others that search for this issue that are in my position with a pump that failed outside the "warranty" period can have more information.

That is not cool that they wouldn’t warranty that. They were very easy to deal with when I had to have my original motor block thingy replaced due to the cord failing.

I can understand their position but for the cost of these dang things they should stand behind them and fix a known design problem.

It’s stuff like this that makes people seek out the jebao knockoffs. If the manufacturer is not going to stand behind it you might as well pay a lot less and at least expect that.

My experience with Chris at Coralvue has always been top notch. While I’m sure some of you are having a tough experience I think if you give him and the company a chance to work with you they will come through. They make a ton of great products and with any manufacturer sometimes the unexpected can happen. It’s how they work with you that can change your experience and Chris is one of the best from my experience.

I have had great experiences with Coralvue in the past. I gave them a chance to make it right this time, including multiple emails explaining my point of view and they would not replace the motor. Just very disappointed this time. The replacement motor is only $69 retail. Standing behind the product when the issue was a known defect would have been the right thing to do.

My thoughts exactly. I expected far more for a $300 pump.

I had one and was contently replacing bushings. I gave up and bought a used jebao from a friend and have had it running for couple of years with out any problems. Would never buy one again.

Ya mine just took a dump last night. The power supply won’t even turn on.

I did the same except new not used. My cord split after 6 months didn't have a back up so I silicone it and got just past the year mark when it split again. I threw it in the garbage, if only I had know about this site back then I would have known that they might have still warrentied it. Oh well but is why I still won't buy any of their products.

That’s a different issue. PSUs die. No one can make a psu that lasts forever. Just buy another on Amazon with the same output voltage and the same or slightly higher amperage.

Turns out it was the controller. Power supply is fine

It was a issue that reflected only a few pumps in the first batch. It has been corrected by Coralvue.
I think if you have similar and your pump is from the first batch you can contact them and they will take care of it.
My pumps are from the first batch and I don't see any problems, even I clean them every three weeks and inspect them closely.
Must say of topic that I love that Module you hook up to your apex to set different modes and schedules. Most part I like is I can have a night mode

I didn't know this was an issue. I have 4 Gyres and just noticed, during the last cleaning, that the sheath has cracked open and exposed the internal wires on one of them.

Hopefully they take care of me.

I hope so too as this was a recal from 3 years ago.
