I picked up a used MP40 QD yesterday. I didn’t really need it but the price was too good to pass up. I took it apart and gave it a good cleaning. It’s on the tank now and it seems pretty noisy to me. I have it on the second lowest speed setting and I can hear it whirring. Is that normal? Doesn’t seem very “quiet drive”to me.

Maybe I did something wrong? I moved the alignment around a bit and that didn’t seem to help. Only thing I can think of is maybe I need a spacer. My tank is 10mm and this didn’t come with a spacer so it is just on the glass.

Are you able to pinpoint if the noise is coming from the wet side or the dry side?

Definitely the dry side. Took off the wet side and I can hear it.

Also, for 6 to 13mm glass the thin spacer is recommended, don't know if that would cause your noise though.

Oh and apparently there is a spacer.

Oh.....that's not good.....without a tear down its hard to know exactly what it is on the dry side, could be a bearing or it could be out of alignment.

Do you know how old the unit is? You can try contacting ecotech and see if there is anything they can do. Otherwise a tear down a bearing replacement of the dry side would be best bet.

I took the front cover off the dry side and ran it. Does seem like a bearing issue. Can I replace it?

2015 date on it. Are there instructions for the bearing replacement?

This is for a non-QD, but I figure you can use your engineering skills to make it happen ;)
If memory serves me right (and it may not, i am getting old after all ;) ) the QD part of it was actually something built into the controller, because you were able to upgrade your mp40 from the non qd to a qd just by buying a new 50$ controller and using the same dry side and wet side

"Driver upgrade or replacement for the VorTech pumps from EcoTech. Convert your VorTech EcoSmart controlled pumps to the latest in noise-reduction technology with the QuietDrive driver! Also can be used to replace a damaged or faulty driver on your VorTech QuietDrive."

Got it opened pretty easily. Issue is that I think the bearing is now pressed onto the magnet. There’s an Allen head screw but it seems to turn the whole thing. There isn’t a head of any kind on the other end.

Wow that was fast. Now the tough part, finding new bearings
