My eel is sick and i need help please

I am 15. The best thing I have learned is to take it slow. I had two eels, but both outgrew my tank at the time. I have been in the planning stage for about 8 months now for my new tank, and I am still about a month away from even ordering it. Don't make rash or quick decisions, and everything will be easier.

thanks, i got into the hobby really young like ten and me and my family kinda just believed everything we were told. So i am trying to recover from my ignorance and start upgrading my stuff. I will totally hit you up but i have to be honest i dont know how to pm I am not very reef2reef smart lol.

Sounds like you are back on the right track. If you ever need help I’m 17 and have lots of experience with eels. I’ve been reefing for about 6-7 years. Hang in there ;)

i think he is doing better i just pray that there is no internal damage. kinda surprised that the fish are this tough but very happy that they are. Also its really cool to meet younger hobbyists
 
well even if the lfs doesn't have saltwater stuff, heaters work in anything i think? i've bought a couple eheim heaters from petsmart for instance

I'm 17 from Aus and have morays in the past and have delt with this "white tail" thing thats going on for you. In my experience it was caused on my zebra moray because my cleaner wrasse would constantly pick at its skin or tail, which my eel didnt like and would scrape and bash against the rocks in his cave to get away...not sure if you have other fish but just dharing some experience with this...also it healed up once the wrasse was removed, only left a funky pattern behind :)
 
Salty, don't feel bad. Things happen in this hobby. I think everyone trusts a heater until a big tragedy occurs.
As far as believing everything, reefing is science. There's a lot known, but even more unknown. We are all going through this using the best information given to us and our experiences from both successes and failures.
For me these challenges are what makes this hobby addictive.
Glad to read about your recovery and I hope you stay in the hobby.
 
I test all my heaters in a bucket of saltwater I use for water change. Why you might ask? I bought a new eheim jagger heater from LFS because the owner of the shop told me they are great and never had a problem with them, but ran heater controllers on them Should have put 2 an2 together. Long story short was doing a saltwater mix to do a water change, took new heater put it in 20 gallon salt mix over night set to 78F in the morning went to do water change and water was 89F. I was lucky it was my DT. What I learned is due research, anything can break test before using and run heaters on controllers so they can’t take off on you the controller will kill the power to it before it can happen. Glad your tank is recovering an sorry this is long winded.

thanks everyone for the support, the tank is back to normal temps today and i am ordering a heater. All the fish are alive but alot of the inverts are gone not the sea hare which is kinda surprising to me but i guess they are used to tide pool life so maybe they are tougher than i thought. Dont know where the sea cucumber is but i dont think he nuked. The eel looks ok sometimes he acts normal sometimes he does weird stuff so i guess we will see what happens. Thanks again for helping me through this it was my first really big problem/crash with a tank so your support helped alot.
 
Check out blue line heater controller there about 60 bucks but work with any heater and will turn off It’s electricity before it can melt down your tank. Hope all goes well with your tank.
 
Well my eel is looking alittle rough does anyone have any suggestions about what i can do to help him survive? I dont know if there is anything i can do for him but i would like to try.

Is there any medication that can help with a fish that got too hot? Or is it just too late and whatever happens will happen?
 
I also have a question about what the heat might have done to my silicone, one of my tank panels does not seem to be flush with the corner that it makes with the other piece of glass like the top is alittle tilted in and the bottom is a little tilted out wards. Does this mean that the silicone softened and my tank is going to burst? I am really worried about it right now.
 
Your best bet with the eel is to wait it out. They are amazingly resilient and he will probably do just fine with no action from you at all. (other than keeping the temp in check!!)

As for the silicone - if your silicone got hot enough to deform, it's because your house was on fire.

Ok thats good to know i am just paranoid about everything fight now.
 
Glad it didn’t crash your entire tank. We had a heater malfunction years back. It was over 90 in my tank for at least 5-6 hours (happened after we went to sleep for the night). The only things that survived were my Goldstripe Maroon clownfish and my OG mama Jawbreaker mushroom. It killed all my other fish and beautiful corals. That’s been over five years ago. Get a heater controller ASAP.

yeah that is pretty much what happend to me, my fish seem to be getting better the eel moved to a different cave today so he at least feels comfortable enough to move around. the bass and the angel fish seem to be doing fine the bass is a little shook but the angelfish took it like a champ.

the eel is still breathing hard so i hope there is not damage to his gills. Do gills grow back if they get hurt?

And most of my inverts are gone, only stuff left are a sea hare, a sea cucumber and hermit crabs. Thank goodness the see cucumber did not nuke.

All the corals are gone. :(
