Probably you will never figure out what happened. A new sailfin will be quite susceptible to disease, but an established pair of clowns should not be. Absent obvious external symptoms, ich is not an overnight killer anyhow. Velvet or brook perhaps, but you would/should have seen obvious signs of either. Doubt is was ammonia either, particularly if you tested for it. Plus, even a dead fish will take a while to drive levels up (given that the biofilter will handle some/most of it). Was there any redness on the gills? Oxygen depletion can be a quick killer - did you have any power loss or reduction in tank circulation?

If your tank was all full of white bits of pipe no one would have said a word about the baby tang, I have a baby semi rescue scopas in an Evo 13.5 to chub it up before it's new home, people need to be a bit more respectful imo.
I know it would be better in a box of pipe fittings swimming in poisons with nothing to graze all day, I think it will survive.

agreed he might not ever know it could have been a disease perhaps but i seriously doubt it was ammonia poisoning and fish can live with ich for months

True. It’s complete speculation when all fish suddenly and mysteriously die overnight. Oxygen could definitely be a culprit.

Sounds like you you’ve got it figured out. Just make sure you have plenty of water agitation in case it was oxygen and a health plan, in case it was disease. All of my loses have been disease related, so every time I set up a new tank, I’ve gotten more more careful with how I add tanks to prevent parasite introduction.

I'm really sorry to hear about your friends passing away from Palytoxin. I wasn't aware that there were any confirmed deaths from it - just a lot of severe symptoms that landed some reefers in the hospital. Would you mind elaborating on how it happened or which palys caused it? I have a few in my tank that I have to be very careful around.

I have a small yellow tang in my 60 gallon, but am planning a 120 with my lfs. I did have a Kole tang in there too, but when ich hit, he succumbed. I decided not to add another until I got the new tank in.

Kole tangs and scopas tangs I believe are some of the smallest tangs.
