My fish are dead

I don’t think I want to do that

I’ll just continue setting up my 40

That's a great idea too. Just don't move anything over until it has been 3 months without fish.

Just be careful. You dont want to move it to the new tank...id get everything new and cycle the tank all fresh then move the coral over after 90 days from your current tank.

So should I just wait the 90 days

I put a new power strip on and the light isn’t going on and off anymore

Will this help

Maybe it is just the light. When it is at full, maybe not enough wattage and it turns off. When at 80 it stays solid

Should I get a Powerhead now

And how long do you think I should wait before getting more livestock

You’re probably better off taking a quick pause, and re-researching on how to set up and take care of a reef tank.

This will allow you to make sure you have the proper equipment, and know what fish/critters you should and shouldn’t be putting in your tank.

Also, next time you think about putting a fish in an undersized aquarium (ie Tang in a 14g cube) be sure to ask yourself:
  • “do i have an appropriate tank already set up to move the fish to once it gets too big?”
  • “am I able to catch the fish without taking apart my tank/rockwork?”
  • “Should I really even bother putting a fish in this small tank, knowing I will have to remove it relatively shortly?”

Yea, everything has been said here 100 times over. This is turning into a “Tell me how to reef” thread. I think cycling from new while you do specific serious research is an absolute must. Slow down and be deliberate. Don’t plan for future tanks just deal with what is currently cycled. Best of luck in the future, but I think some research is in order. If you are a salty pro you can fudge some stuff, but newer reefers should play it by the Numbers. Just my opinion. Out.

I think it makes it more likely an oxygen issue than parasites. (I’ve learned to always take a picture of the dead fish. Even if it feels morbid.) Perhaps stray voltage as someone else suggested. Figuring out why your power strip is flickering would be good. Im not an electrician, so that’s not something I can be super helpful with. If it were me, I’d buy a new one and see if it’s still doing it.

I put a new one in
And the new one is flickering too?
If so, I personally would call an electrician.

On a side note, my husband is currently on the phone trying to schedule an electrician to Come put in new circuits just for the sound system and another for the fish tanks.

Not trying to butt in here, but if your new power strip is still going on and off, i would check the house wiring, circuit breakers, outlets, etc.
An undetected power outage over an entire night could definitely nuke a tank. And even small repeated outages could conceivably cause an ammonia and oxygen problem that worsened over time, magnified exponentially by the small size of the tank and overstocking.

I don’t think it’s oxygen because the return doesn’t go off with the light
sorry, thought you said it was the power strip itself that was going on and off
