My Students 10g Nano

yeah I was thinking the same thing dixie. I am going to work toward some lights here next. The shrimp is paid for and just needs the all clear from the poly filter to come on in. Im going to wait even though some snails are doing just fine now. I remeasured the temp with 4 different thermometers because it felt a bit warmer than 76 at second thought. Turns out I was around 79 - 81 from my calculations. I know snails dont like the super warm temp water so i turned it down and hopefully it will stay around 75. The poly filter will get anything that is unwanted and we cna move on to bigger and better things.

The 3.99 thermometer I had in there was about 3 to 4 degrees off. I should have checked from the start. I will say this, this nano is giving me a crash course in how greatly things are effected and how quickly, in small tanks. Would I start a small one again?...probably not, I would hold out for a 30+ next time I do a school tank. Next year....hopefully.

Thanks for the support guys, I'll keep it updated.

The sexy shrimp may be an expensive snack for the clown.

I guess anything is possible, i kinda doubt it tho.

edit: now that i think about it some more, i would prob suggest no shrimp at all until the cryptic life begins to really take population hold. Just another thought as all shrimp are voracious predators.

the cleaner should be okay with the mysis im feeding the clown, he will help clean up the scraps, especially if he get hungry enough. Im getting a small detrius bloom in the tank with only 2 snails present, its a good thing tho, they will have something to munch on when i introduce more.

Check out aquatraders for lights! I got both of mine there! One is t5, it has 2 whites 2 blues and 4 moonlight leds. I have it on my 10 now( paid $50). My other has 6 leds, 4 white and 2 blues, paid 30 something. Currently have it on my 3 gallon but I read of people having it on 12 gal no problem!

Thanks Dixie, I think im going to go ahead and buy a fixture for them. They are all really excited about some corals and it stinks when they can do the "cool" looking stuff haha. Im going to have a student paint the back black today, ill throw some pictures up, everything else is fantastic. My tester snails and doing well and the fish is doing great. My nitrates are around .02 so my LR filtration and HOB is doing its job, for now. Im keeping a close eye on the parameters since I am a little new to the nanos.

So I saw that you dose Kalk+2 from Brightwell in your other tank - do you have a marked increase in magnesium levels when using it?

I did dose mag before I was using the Kalk 2+ now I dont have to it, its help with alk, cal and mag now. I just do 2.5 tblsps per 5 g water in my ATO with RO/DI and it has kept me stable the last 3 weeks now.

Added a cut up poly filter to the HOB filter today, used about 1/4 of the smaller pads. Hopefully this drags out whatever is killing my snails! (Lost the 2 testers...again.) The kids are getting anxious.

A poly filter is only going to remove suspended solids from the water. If there is something in there that is taking the snails out, it would be unaffected by the poly. I don't know what it could be, unless there is some sort of trace metal or something. :/

And as for the Kalk+2, do you have any magnesium test results from before and after starting with it? I've read a lot of things about how it cannot do what it says it can do, but there are a lot of people that are getting results with it.

I should have some better test results for you after today, this will be my third week of dosing and ill post on my 55 thread the before / after results. So far my Mg has held constant. Today will be the determining factor. Im prayingt he poly filter does something, otherwise its going to have to be a complete restart.
