I had to remove a large piece of rock from my tank.
Tank is a year and 2 months or so old now.

The tank was cycled with BRS Reef Saver rock. I used a large piece for base rock. I recently decided I didn't like it's looks. So I wanted to break it into pieces and reattach to improve the aquascape and some surface area.
After trying really hard to get this rock to break with a hammer and mallet, I started using a chisel. Only the chisel would just get embedded. After pulling it out, this wet white stuff was covering the chisel. In fact the whole inside of this rock is wet and almost mushy.

Anyway this is a big chunk of bacteria colony here. What do I need to do to make sure my fish and coral will be fine? Can I add more rock?

just rinse it.
also if you use the chisel to score the rocke(make a line) itll come apart easier in the spots you want.

if you have a wood chisel its sharper btw and works a bit better. I do use both depending.

The white could be sponge too. or a bit of everything.

I thought about it but i'm worried it's going to start water logged until it all just breaks down. The inside of this rock is like wet concrete. I can easily scoop stuff out lol

Have you tried just scoring a line then putting a two bricks on either side of the line and then hitting on the line?

Must be an old rock. Don't sweat it too hard unless yea its gross. The one BAD rock I had leached N/P like mad and when I broke it, it stank.

Well, I got through the hard stuff, it's all mush inside. When I try to break the rock, it just flings into tiny pieces with white stuff spraying everywhere lol

It's man made rock from BRS lol. i actually suspect the complete opposite. I think they shipped me rock that wasn't dry.

I can't put this rock in my tank. Its soft.

When I broke mine up I put it in a towel then smashed it on the ground... Yeah... bit crazy and random but meh did the job breaking up rock for the sump haha

as for my display I refuse to break rocks... I love the natural breaks and marks. I think when people break the rock up it doesn't look very natural :\

Weird. its been in for 2 years?
No I purchased this rock in Jan. 2016. It just man made BRS reef saver rock. Not even dead live rock. Its such a thick piece of rock and I don't think it was completely dried after being "formed" or whatever they do. i think there was a inch or 2 of dry surface that made it appear to be hard, but i'm telling you, the inside is soft and mushy.

ugggg. Guess Id never though about whats inside man made over time.

I tking most folks(me at one time) dont suspect that there's water deep in the rock, but it get in through pores.

Well that's a bummer.

So the tank has a super minimalist look now LOL. Maybe 12lbs of rock in this 30 gallon tank. Other than getting Live rock(i dont want the hitchhikers) is there something I can do?

lol. I prefer the term sculpt, not break...

I have a rock that has Petrified coral sticks running through it. Pure mineral. Like gems, if you've seen thinly sliced petrified wood. I'm gonna saw that suker one day.

you can clean LR really effectively. Folks forget that. takes less time than curing/cycling.
