I've tried using this product several of times to increase my nitrates and I always end up with this black slime all over my chateo. It eventually ends up killing it. Has anyone had this experience? Anyone know what the black slime is btw?

The picture above was from yesterday after attempting 2 consecutive days of just trying to increase nitrates up to 1 ppm

Below is from January of this year as well

How many ppm’s did you dose according to your total volume?

The scenario might be that the Chaeto is stressed or dying and the slime is taking advantage of a free meal. How are you managing trace elements. If they are low, Cheato will suffer.

85 gallon with a sump, I did approximately 10 ml a day on the consecutive days as of recent.

I honestly, I haven't ever tested for trace elements or added unless it was through water changes.

I switched over to red sea ab+ to raise my nitrates and the chateo ended up growing back. I went to double the recommended value on the ab+ in attempt to raise nitrates up but they ended up still being at 0. everything looked happy still but just wanted to give neo nitro a try again.

I recently got the black slime in my chaeto also. Been fine for 2 years. Not sure where it came from but I just trim the chaeto way back and let it try any outcompete the slime algae. Coincidentally I did dose some neonitro recently as well.

Do you still use that stuff?

This is really strange, also cyano bacteria is starting to come back so I stopped dosing that which was only a few days.

But this is some photos of my rock not using neo nitro and just overloading on red sea ab+ You can see the algae below the zoas

Using the red sea aminos daily is going to sky rocket your phosphate. You want nitrates at 10 to 15 and phosphate. 05 to .1. Some green slime algae here and there on rocks is good for the tank. Gives cleaners and grazers something to eat. Eventually the slime algae goes away and coraline replaces it mostly on the rocks.

They have phosphate in their amino acid formulation?

I've been monitoring my nitrates and phosphates with salifert test kit and after dosing 90-100 ml a day, My phosphates have never gone above .03.

That's because it's binding into the rocks and sand. At some point you will reach super saturation point and then bam exploding high phosphate as it slowly leached. I am going through this now. Coral aminos raise phosphates. Reef roids is the worst.

Try to calculate the ppm concentration for your volume. I can’t see what the back of the bottle says but it should be there. Only raise NO3 by 1 ppm in 24 hrs and you won’t have any issues.

I guess not. Odd how they don’t give dosing instructions on NeoNitro. Maybe old label on Amazon.

The calculation is volume x nitrates ppm x .1261

My tank is 85 gallons plus a sump which is probably 10 to 15 gallons and I only put in 10 ml. I did test 24 hours later and the nitrates were still undetectable.

However I do run my chateo light 24x7 but also do now feed overly wasteful on flake food 3x a day and frozen 2x a day and adding the recommended amount of red sea ab+ for a ulns system on the back which is 12ml per 25 gallon.

What's in their formulation? I used to use it a few times a week and it raised my phosphates. That's all I can say about it but other corals supplements do the same also.

I don’t know.
