i picked up a new torch saturday, it hasn't opened yet, i floated the bag and slowly added a small amount of tank water over a couple hours to acclimate before adding to the tank, i also have some brown algae that I'm not sure what it is, could it possibly be dinos and that maybe the reason the torch isn't opening? my duncan and zoos have seemed to not be open as much as usual also, i did add some new sand in the sump a couple weeks ago so i thought that it could be diatoms from that but it seems too snotty for those? its a 65 gallon with a 32 sbreef led, i have the whites as low as they will go and the blues about 30% because i was afraid the lights were too bright keeping it closed, the torch has come out a half inch or so occasionally but not for long.
i just tested and my parameters are.
ammonia-0
nitrite-0
nitrate-0
phosphate-0
kh-10
cal-400
ph-7.8
temp 77f
s.g. 1.024

Might want to try to raise the phosphate a little, I had the same problem last week and now my torch is looking better. also might want to try moving it to different areas of flow and light.

I think you need some dirtier water. I also think it could be your light, but I see you turned it low. Keep it turned down for a while and it may come out.

I’ve turned my skimmer way down where it barely bubbles, I only have a clown and a starry blenny in so far, 2 peppermint, 2 emeralds, so not a lot of waste is generated, I had about 10 pounds of rock in my sump and a 8x8x4 marinepure block, I’ve took the rock out of the sump and put some sand in the refuge to plant some macro, should I feed more to raise nutrients? The tank has been up 5 months.

correct me if im wrong but you should only raise the phosphates if your tank is clean and you dont have cyno or hair algae growing everywhere. The high phosphates and silica will cause this type of growth....maybe his phosphates are to high and thats why the coral wont open?

I would agree but his testing of phosphate is 0ppm.

I don't know enough about getting rid of algae but I would keep in mind that you have a lot of algae now and you don't want it getting worse. what test kits do you use?

RO/DI, have a RO/DI filter in the garage, i keep a brute can full.
Good Deal, then I trust the 0 test on phosphates then, im still a little stumped though. That growth looks like red cyno and I do believe its cause by high nitrates and possibly phosphates. I could very possibly be wrong its hard to tell but I do know this from experience if its red cyno that stuff isnt as respectful as some algaes in the sense of not growing and taking over a coral or macro algae. Id wager that the cause of that (whatever it is) is the reason your coral isnt open.

I would try a different phosphate test kit like the Red Sea, I find those to be much more reliable. also I would keep that skimmer rolling where it should be. also I would keep doing water changes every week 10%. its clear that your water isn't in the best condition because of all the algae and hiding coral. may be because of those test kits but hard to be sure. I would start experimenting but definitely work on the water changes IMO. Goodluck!

Growth looks like Dino’s. The bubbles at the ends is a dead giveaway. Your water is WAY to clean to keep a torch. I have found in my many years of keeping torches they need nutrients in the water. Roughly 10ppm Nitrates and .05ppm-.10ppm Phosphates in the water to thrive. This will also help battle the Dino’s as they thrive is nutrient lacking water.

Did this brown stuff just pop up in a day?...like was your tank nice looking and within a couple days look like that? I ask because if so then zack is right, cyno has to grow...goes fast but starts out as a patch somewhere on a rock and just spreads and when you go at it you can peel it like carpet and it makes a mess that ruins your tank....if it doesnt look like that your good it isnt cyno.
