My nitrates are creeping up in my 12g nano for no reason I can explain. I did have two fish die but they were removed immediately. I did a 2g water change after this, and a week later they are still at 10-15. I have a skimmer, purigen and gfo. Phosphates are at zero. Corals aren't complaining but I'd like to start dosing something in addition to regular 1g water changes. Right now there's only coral, snails, crabs and shrimp in my tank. Where are the nitrates coming from? I clean the sponge in the sump weekly. The skimmer is pulling out a watery green skimmate. Could I start to dose nopox or something else that would only decrease nitrates? I know there's stuff out there that works with a skimmer. I'd like to keep the nitrates between 5-10ppm. Not super low, but enough to feed the softies without bothering the SPS. I've already checked for dead animals and there's nothing. What creates nitrates in a tank without any fish? Here are my other numbers:
Alk 9kh
Mg 1390ppm
Ca 490ppm
Temp 78f
Nitrates 10-15ppm
Phosphates 0ppm
SG: 1.022
Ph: 7.8-8.0

I dose with kalk, which takes care of alk, Ph and calcium. I never need to dose mg.
 
Mines doing the same thing in my 29 gallon reef can't figure it out but everything seems to be doing well

All of those creatures that consume any food (including algae) will release ammonia that is converted into nitrate.

Ultimately, the source is foods. Do you add any?

Organic carbon dosing may be an option (vodka, vinegar, NOPOX, etc), but without skimming I'd take it very slowly.

Thanks. I do have a skimmer now and this is one of the reasons I got one. My gfo keeps the phosphates at almost zero so I don't need to lower those. What are the downsides or other effects on the tank when you dose?
I have fed my acans mysis but only once. I don't broadcast feed reef roids at present because they send the nitrates up quickly.

9. Organic Carbon Dosing

Organic carbon dosing involves adding a soluble organic compound to the aquarium which spurs bacterial growth. Typical organics used can be ethanol (as vodka), acetic acid (as vinegar), calcium acetate (as lime saturated vinegar), sugar (sucrose) and many others. Vodka and vinegar are by far the most popular. I use vinegar.

These organic molecules can be used by many organisms, including corals, but the main intent is to drive bacterial growth. To grow, the bacteria need a source of nitrogen and a source of phosphate, and a large portion of these they remove directly from the water. The bacteria may grow out of sight (inside live rock or sand, in refugia, in tubing, etc.). They may also grow in globs in the display tank. They have to grow somewhere. If they become unsightly, try dosing a different organic that may drive a different set of species that may grow in a different location. I’ve had them often seem to grow on GAC (granular activated carbon media) in a canister filter I previously used, allowing relatively easy export by rinsing the GAC once every couple of weeks.

I’ve never heard any plausible argument why dosing multiple organics at once is desirable, but many people do it and there is likely no harm in doing so. The idea that multiple organics drive a diversity of bacterial species is just speculation, and even if true, I don’t see the benefit.

The bacteria themselves can then be skimmed out, or used as a food for filter feeders, or both (most people probably have both to some extent, unless they do not use a skimmer). The bacteria may grow partly in low O2 regions (such as in sand or rock) and partly in highly oxygenated environments. Since metabolism in low O2 regions uses relatively more nitrate than phosphate compared to metabolism in a high O2 environment, the relative amounts of nitrate and phosphate reduction an aquarists observes may vary from system to system.

Nitrate is always reduced to a greater extent than phosphate simply because bacteria need a lot more nitrogen than phosphorus, but metabolism of organics in low O2 regions may skew it even more, and sometimes can leave the aquarium with little nitrate and an excess of phosphate that they bacteria don’t “want”. In such a case, a phosphate binder might usefully export this remaining phosphate. Alternatively, some aquarists have dosed nitrate directly to the aquarium to allow the residual phosphate to be consumed.

One potential drawback that may have played a role in some tank problems is that the bacteria that thrive when organic molecules are dosed may be benign (and appear to be in almost all cases), but might actually be pathogenic in others. That is, the added organics may enhance bacterial infections if those bacteria causing the infection (of fish, corals, etc.) are able to take up the added organics and use them to grow faster. I think this risk is low, but it may be real. If you have unexplained problems that might fit this description, and are organic carbon dosing, try not dosing for an extended period.

A second potential drawback of organic carbon dosing is the potential for proliferation of unsightly cyanobacteria in the display tank. There are many species of cyanobacteria, and some can consume the organics we add in this method. If they become a primary consumer, then something may need to be done, such as switching to a different organic compound to dose, or reducing phosphate with a binder such as GFO (granular ferric oxide).
 
have you vaccumed the sandbed during water change?
I pretty much leave it alone so I don't release a bunch of junk into the water. It stays pretty clean because the crabs and snails stir it up a little.
 
The nitrate is coming from the snails, shrimp and crabs as stated by Mr. Holmes-Farley. Why not just do another water change before jumping to dosing?
 
In a 12g tank it is easier to wreck havoc than to keep stability. I don't see your no3 levels being high enough to be detrimental to your tank life.
as they say don't chase numbers, be consistent with the care and stability.
SMALL water changes on a schedule will do you more good than dosing.
we always jump to blame chemistry when all we have to blame is ourselves

By cleaning your sand bed you will enhance the nitrification/denitrification potential of the substrate by allowing getter flow and the removal of excess organic material. By feeding more (especially dry foods), you will be supplying a source of carbon which the denitrifying bacteria need to perform their function of converting nitrate to di-nitrogen and nitrous oxide gases. An alternative to feeding more is to 'carbon dose', which obviously also provides the carbon source that the bacteria need.

By using these two simple processes (vacuuming and a good amount of food input) I've managed my 12g 'mixed reef' for many, many years with <1 ppm nitrate and 'untestable' PO4 (Salifert) without using GAC, GFO, or a skimmer.

Having said all that, 10 - 12 ppm nitrate is typically not a problem in most tanks, but if you see it rise appreciably over time, then at least you know how to bring it down.

Nanos tend to not have a lot of live rock in them for denitrification.
In my 10g IM Fusion, i put those Marine Pure sphere's in the filter compartment and the tank has no nitrates registering. With a cheap test kit, anyway.

But good advice above on general husbandry.

How do you vacuum a sand bed without sucking out all the sand? I've never been able to figure this one out.

I use one of those siphon tube gizmos they sell for vacuuming gravel. They have a large cylinder on one end attached to a hose. I spliced in a plastic valve from the hardware sore so that I can easily control flow:

I have 10-12lbs of live rock. Is that enough?
 
I have a NUVO40 that's considered a nano I dose carbon and GFO with a BRS dual reactor best thing I ever did plus my protein skimmer...weekly water change...my nitrates are >.o5 ppm...they not 0 but I have a mixed reef so they say it's good to have a little nitrate and my levels are very steady
