To expect companies to share ALL of their ingredients is folly, you wouldn't if you produced something that made a huge leap in the hobby.

Since, at my estimate,a large fraction of the SPS and mixed tank reefers on forums like this one use my DIY two part, I think that suggests your assertion incorrect. I told people how to make it, and didn't keep it secret. I think it has helped quite a large number of reefers save a ton of money, and I'll note that many companies now copy it.

And as far as the reducing dosage, yes, I was surprised as well, but you HAVE TO reduce dosage after the 'ball gets rolling' otherwise you're going to kill the tank.(which I think many have done and then turn around and call it too effective) I believe this in itself proves as well it's not just a carbon dosing solution, it's following the descriptors in the article, you're provoking something else in the tank. So I would imagine they're a bit more spot-on in their article than you give them credit for.

I'm not sure why you think that is special for NOPOX. This is a quote from one of the early articles to come out detailing vodka dosing:

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-08/nftt/

  1. When your NO3 and PO4 levels drop near undetectable with your test kits cut your current dose in half. This will be your starting maintenance dose (if the levels drop during week 2 then the dose after reaching undetectable levels would be 0.65ml daily [1.3ml divide by 2])."

After all, I would bet they have more money than any of us combined on the forums, and they have the numerous phd's to satisfy the science behind it. Unless you would like to share some observations from some research grant you've received? :)

No need to get personal, but I certainly have an answer to such a comment. I guarantee I've lead larger and more successful research programs than Red Sea. How many billions of dollars of product do you think they sell each year that those PhD invented? I expect it is much less than 1. And the ones I've invented save lives, many, many lives, not just make pretty colored aquaria. :)

But if you'd rather I stop trying to treat human disease to work on explaining why a minor aquarium product is or is not appreciably better than another product, I will by all means move quickly to that end because it seems really important to you.

Ahh Randy. You're quite the intelligent individual, but for some reason you make things personal before you even say why! :p

I'm not saying you don't do great things, but there's been more than a few times what you say really doesn't pan out. This is why I say what I do.
And to trash talk like you do, well, I guess I don't have to say anything.

I suggest you put aside your opinion and try the product.
I too am a skeptic, and it took a long time before I tried the product. But overall, I wish I would have listened less to people on the forums who SEEM to know a lot, and just tried it from the beginning. Let's just say since I got into the Red Sea line, I no longer have questions for the forums.
But good luck Randy, perhaps someday you'll try it. To others, I think you see what I'm talking about.

I shared that article for the sake of sharing information, but what's your reason behind trying to debunk it? Again I have to say I've seen the results of that article first hand, and it surely doesn't coincide to what you have to say in rebuttal. Do you do it to sell something? Perhaps something we don't know you actually sell?

Just curious, because it seems whenever someone brings info the table, you're the only one who has all of the correct answers.. :)

I'm not looking to get personal, but you're just a human, and so is everyone else...
I've read just about everything you've ever written, but that does not mean you can't be wrong. (at least once ;P)

Fine, we'll agree to disagree. :)

Are you just doubting it works? Or are you doubting their explanation of why it works?(that article)

I never agree to disagree, it's not about my opinion, it's about science. :)

And as far as patents go, sure, in the pharma industry it's pretty easy. But patents in many other areas of industry just don't work. This for instance wouldn't work to have a patent on. It would still be the knowing, that is worth more than the patent.

Btw, do you sell anything in the aquarium trade? (brand/product etc)

I'm doubting (or at least lacking any evidence) that it works noticeably better (or differently in any way) than the DIY version of the main ingredients comprising one part vinegar (5% acidity) to one half part vodka (80 proof) and one half part water. :)

So because you doubt something, that makes it worthwhile enough to discredit, without any sort of evidence whatsoever?
Because it does work, and quite well compared to vsv/vv ime.

Apologies, I'm finding it more and more that when sharing my experiences online, there's always that 1 person, who says, "oh no, you're completely wrong, I have no evidence as to why, but you are".

Further, wouldn't you agree that concerning pharmaceuticals a patent is on the chemical structure, for which there is only 1, as opposed to a formula of elements, in which you can change a single component by a single percent, and thus it is a "completely different" solution? (which makes it near-impossible to achieve a protected status via patent)

I would take you more seriously if I knew you weren't JUST defending your DIY recipe. (based from a hunch)

lol

Actually, this is not opinion (mine or anyone elses), but experimental result. It is the ratio of ingredients from a chemical analysis at a University Lab and posted online. Not something I did, although I have confidence it was done correctly. :)

You are welcome to your opinions, and I have mine. In this case, mine are based on knowing the main ingredients in this product, and the results obtained by a very large numbers of reefers.

On the patent issue, many patents cover mixtures, including some of mine, and exact amounts are everything in such patents. :)

I understand that, but were they able to identify every element in the solution? No they were not.
If you do pharmaceuticals you know how important 1% of something can be let alone .25%.
So please do not bash something just because you think it's the same, though you lack any concrete evidence.

I'm all for doing things cheaper, heck, I'm the king of diy in my family. But I know when to debate something because I have proof versus not. :(
I'm all for figuring out what's in it, but until someone does another breakdown and can successfully identify the remaining elements, it's not a constructive debate based on factual data.

See above message...

Again, I simply disagree.

So I suggest we just let this drop.

Then please do. We can respect each others choices, but it surely will come back to this situation again if you want to chime in on my expressing my experiences with nopox, and I will express the same points again.. :P
I have found an avid appreciation for nopox. And I surely gave all of the above more chances than I care to share, but was still surprised by the results.

And I'm completely serious about sending you some, just message me details. I thought it was expensive too but after getting down to .5ml a day, that argument flies out the window. I do receive many compliments on how clean my tank is, and that's the pudding.

Hey Randy, if you wouldnt mind, could you post again those links to all the water chemistry articles you've written? I wanted to copy all of those for easy reference/access to them, and give them a read. Thanks, much appreciated. Very thankful for your contributions

I know this thread is old I want to know how did you mount the BRS dual reactor on the Nuvo 40? That is somthing I would like to do and can't see how it would work with a strong enough pump. Thank you for the help
