No Tank Lids vs Yes Tank Lids ?

Open top here unless im doing lighting maintenance or am gone for more than 5 days on vacation. (Helps a lot with evap and i only have a 7 gallon ATO at the moment)

I have a canopy. It's completely sealed by it's construction except for vent holes on the very top and two 120mm case fans that have screen mesh over them. Lights are 12" above waterline. Overflows have lids.
If I didn't have a canopy, I would most certainly have screens over it. I keep wrasses and they do jump from time to time.
Glass lids do keep evaporation down, but can have condensation build up on them and deposits can form. This was my experience with them when I first started out keeping a reef back in 92. If this is the case, you would need to clean them frequently.
Gas exchange is important though.

I've always used glass lids without, the hinge's. Any type of lid is going to get salt spray, so I learned early on, salt can stain the glass. I had to soak them in the bathtub with vinegar and used my auto body buffer to get them clean. Next time,...I'LL BUY NEW GLASS ! lol
Our new 125g build is a in-wall reef, in the living room, so I'll need to cover the front with glass or the mesh to keep salt spray and creep from reaching the drywall and tank glass.

I like to have lids on my tank, to keep the critters from jumping or getting out.

I dont tank lid. I tryed a mesh one once and ditched it real fast. Just was not for me never had a real use for it I guess

I had a pet harlequin tusk - very tame - but he got used to actually jump out of the water - when I came close to feed him. I got a xxxxxx lid - and the next day I found he had jumped through the cover (pushed it off the tank) - and found hi m on the floor - I then bought another tusk - same thing happened after 2 days - I replaced the cover with a clear view - cant even tell its on the tank - and its mesh. Well made

Mesh lid for me. I really like the look without them but I've had a dwarf lion jump out and die. I had a lid built for that tank but I didn't have it on because I didn't know any of the fish were jumpers. I also had a diamond goby jump out of a QT tank with the full plastic hood. I guess he got out where the HOB filter was? And while doing work on a tank so the lid was off my Midas Blenny shot out of the tank and smacked the wall. Luckily I could reach him where he landed and was able to get him back in the tank and he's still fine.
