I think you can get a bit nutrient mad .... particularly the novice reefer. I think a bit of nitrate and phosphate is a good thing. Having said that, I'm a huge fan of algal turf scrubbers, having run them on my reef tanks in various guises since the early 1990s. Modern units, whether bought or DiY, are a huge improvement over the old dump-bucket style monstrosities. I would always recommend running carbon with an ATS; helps to remove any coloring agents and chemicals released by the algae.
