I think you can get a bit nutrient mad .... particularly the novice reefer. I think a bit of nitrate and phosphate is a good thing. Having said that, I'm a huge fan of algal turf scrubbers, having run them on my reef tanks in various guises since the early 1990s. Modern units, whether bought or DiY, are a huge improvement over the old dump-bucket style monstrosities. I would always recommend running carbon with an ATS; helps to remove any coloring agents and chemicals released by the algae.

I'm a big fan of macro algae. If you don't have refugium space in the sump, why not add some gracilaria or dragons breath in a corner? Looks nice enough for the display, takes up nutrients, minimal cost.

I have the same problem but my tank is over 2 yrears old. The other problem is its a Nuvo all in one 20 gallon so I have limited room. I have a wood stone protein skimmer that works fairly well. I do weekly water changes and just doesnt seem to do much I clean the sand as I do water changes. So I have no idea what to do..

Look up Greyfish aquatics. He makes scrubbers for AIO tanks.
