I know there is an old thread on this but its so old I wanted to start a new one.

Would you consider your tank over stocked?

I consider mine over stocked for now but I'll be picking up a 210g system this week so time to keep "stocking"

Current list for my 55 gallon with a 20 sump + canister filter
- 1 baby blue hippo
- 1 baby sailfin
- 1 carpenter wrasse
- maroon clown pair
- 1 LTA
- some soft corals and LPS
- 1 Snowflake eel

I will be keeping this 55 just for the eel and maybe a pair of wild lion fish because the beaches in Miami are loaded with baby lionfish ATM

210 will have a 60 gallon breeder sump and 150 Display 6 foot long for the tangs I want to add the following
- Everything from the 55 - the eel
- mandarin dragonette ( after a pod population establishes )
- scopas tang
- 3 female carpenter wrasse
- midas blenny
- as many corals as I can get

Your 55g does not appear to be overstocked. I generally dont overstock but was to move cross country and transferred many tangs and other fish into a 135g. While they did quite well, I know it was not ideal and purchased and moved them to a 400g

I definetly overstock but it works for me:

My 110 gallon:
  • Frostbite & domino clownfish, Amphiprion ocellaris

  • Common foxface, Siganus vulpinus
  • Royal gramma, Gramma loreto
  • Midas blenny, Ecsenius midas
  • 2 Mandarins, Synchiropus splendidus
  • (one eyed) Orange spot goby, Amblyeleotris guttata
  • Red Sea leopard wrasse, Macropharyngodon marisrubri
  • Radiant wrasse, Halichoeres iridis
  • Pink streaked wrasse, Pseudocheilinops ataenia
  • Lunate fairy wrasse, Cirrhilabrus lunatus
  • Exquisite fairy wrasse, Cirrhilabrus exquisitus
  • Timor wrasse, Halichoeres timorensis
  • Yellowtail wrasse, Anampses meleagrides
  • Red saddled anthias, Pyronotanthias flavoguttatus
  • Gold nugget Wrasse, Xenojulis margaritaceus
  • Dusky margined wrasse, Halichoeres marginatus
To be added:
  • Blue flasher wrasse

My 125 gallon:
  • Banded snake eel 26"
  • Gold spotted snake eel 24"
  • Snowflake eel 13"
  • 2 x Engineer gobies 10" + 8"

In terms of bioload no .
But in terms of can I add anything without aggression . Yes I’m at my limit

Like my screename suggests - I overstock my tanks. I like small fish and I like community docile fish for the most part.

While we have 750g to play with now, we still have a well stocked tank.

3 Yellow Tangs
3 Purple Tangs
1 Achilles Tang
1 Mimic Tang
1 Flame Tail Tang
1 Lavendar Tang
1 Sailfin Tang
6 Hippo Tang
6 Designer clowns
2 Venustus Angels
3 Flameback Angels
2 Goldflake Angels
2 Bellus Angels
1 Regal Angel
2 Yellow Coris Wrasse
1 Leopard Wrasse
2 Melanarus Wrasse
2 Mandarins
2 Blue Stripe Pipes
1 Janns Pipefish
2 Flame Hawks
30 Assorted Anthias
2 Fairy Wrasses
1 Prawn Goby
1 Rose Goby
2 Escenius Blenny
1 Red Spotted Blenny
8 Bangai Cardinals
10 Blue Spine Cardinals
6+ Springeri Damsels
6+ Kupang Damsels
3 Rolandi Damsels
2 Starcki Damsels
2 Royal Gramma
2 Black Cap Basslets
1 Skunk Pseudochromis
2 Yellow Assesors
6 Macneils Assesors
2 Frimandi Pseudochromis
1 Yellow Clown Goby

and yes - 10+ mollies

I am sure we are missing a few fish here and there. And sometimes fish show up that you didn't even know were in there. This is about 130 fish. I kept a similar population in my 400g. Fish were Fat and healthy with 4 different types of angels spawning nightly. I find that with an 'overstocked' aquarium within choas you find peace. With so many fish to interact with and catch attention that aggression is not an issue. That's not to say that every few years a tang gets too big for it's britches and turns into a bully. But in the last dozen plus years we have only had to do that on 2 occassions.

I got to see a video of this.

40G breeder + 20G long sump.

2x red firefish goby
1x yellowhead jawfish
1x yellow wrasse
1x midas blenny
1x tomini tang

the tang will get rehomed as I no longer will be upgrading to a bigger tank. hoping to replace it with some sort of utilitarian fish like a court jester goby or similar. i'll probably get a shrimp goby to pair with my randall's pistol shrimp.

80G cube

Recently lost 3 wrasses, and my lantern basslet .

1 blue eye kole
1 female clown
1 moyers leopard
1 melagris leopard
1 yellow corris
1 starry blenny
1 male lyretail anthias
1 randalls pistol with goby pair
1 lemon peel angel

I find 13 to 14 fish the sweet spot for my tank. Any more and the bioload is to high and I have issues keeping nutrients in check. Much less and I end up dosing nutrients.

90G with 29G sump.

10 fish total.

4 anthias, 2 clowns, tomini, wrasse, fire fish and pseudochromis.

105G

1 Mocha Storm Clown
1 Black Storm Clown
1 One Spot Foxface
1 Coral Beauty
2 Azure Damsels
1 Flame Hawkfish
1 Rosy Scaled Wrasse
1 Blue Jaw Trigger

110gal

- Gem Tang
- Yellow Tang
- Blue Hippo Tang
- White Tail Bristletooth Tang
- Yellow Watchman Goby
- Longnose Hawkfish
- Mandarin Dragonet
- Copperband Butterflyfish
- Blue Throat Triggerfish
- Valentini Pufferfish
- 2x Clownfish
- Foxface Rabbitfish

Still want to add an Angel and a Wrasse, but definitely worried I'm overdoing it. ;)

65 gallon DT, 75 total. Only three fish right now.

- 2x Clownfish
- 1x Royal Gramma

Probably going to add a few more soon, maybe some damsels and a foxface.

The bioload isn't entirely over stocked the tank is just crowded, no aggression (not even from the maroons) but it will one day be an issue im sure not just a matter of if but when. Plus im the "one more fish wont hurt" kind of guy
