I have a 79 gallon Planet Aquarium and man, I would love that many fish. I think mine still needs maturing, hell I am still waiting on my nitrate to go down. I think I have only 7 fish!

I know there is an old thread on this but its so old I wanted to start a new one.

Would you consider your tank over stocked?

I consider mine over stocked for now but I'll be picking up a 210g system this week so time to keep "stocking"

Current list for my 55 gallon with a 20 sump + canister filter
- 1 baby blue hippo
- 1 baby sailfin
- 1 carpenter wrasse
- maroon clown pair
- 1 LTA
- some soft corals and LPS
- 1 Snowflake eel

I will be keeping this 55 just for the eel and maybe a pair of wild lion fish because the beaches in Miami are loaded with baby lionfish ATM

210 will have a 60 gallon breeder sump and 150 Display 6 foot long for the tangs I want to add the following
- Everything from the 55 - the eel
- mandarin dragonette ( after a pod population establishes )
- scopas tang
- 3 female carpenter wrasse
- midas blenny
- as many corals as I can get
I like the idea that amount of equipment needed to keep nitrates and phosphates under control reflects the degree of overstocking.

Not Over Stocked
No equipment besides granulated activated carbon, filter sock and up to a weekly 10% water change

Border Line Over Stocked
Need a protein skimmer

Over Stocked
Need equipment or additives to control nitrate and phosphate concentration. The nitrate control reflects how much protein is added to the system to sustain the stock, as is the phosphate.

By this criteria my 100 gallon system is overstocked with 6 green Chomis, 16 large Mexican turbos, Xenia that cover almost everything and a sand sifting sea star. My protein input is 1-2 cubes of frozen brine shrimp and Mysis shrimp per day and 3/4 of a 8x8 inch sheet of dried algae. I have a 10 gallon Ulva pond attached to the system (and skimmer and GAC) to keep the nitrate under 5 ppm and phosphate around 0.1 ppm.

110gal

- Gem Tang
- Yellow Tang
- Blue Hippo Tang
- White Tail Bristletooth Tang
- Yellow Watchman Goby
- Longnose Hawkfish
- Mandarin Dragonet
- Copperband Butterflyfish
- Blue Throat Triggerfish
- Valentini Pufferfish
- 2x Clownfish
- Foxface Rabbitfish

Still want to add an Angel and a Wrasse, but definitely worried I'm overdoing it. ;)
This is the kind of stocking I would like for my 125! How do you manage the nutrients? I would love to add lots of tangs and butterfly’s too my aquarium but worried about bioload

Thanks! As @Dan_P said, filter for the bioload, not the size of the tank. I run a big Tunze 9415 skimmer, lanthanum chloride and a little GFO for phosphate and Orca Titanium biocubes for nitrates. Phos at around 0.12, nitrate at around 30, want to get it down to 15. Dosing All 4 Reef for corals. I feed very heavily, autofeeder 3 times a day and a big serving of DIY frozen food once a day, volume more or less equivalent to 8-10 blocks Ocean Nutrition frozen food. Also running a 55w UV and ozone (100mg ozone through a DIY reactor based off the Avast Marine Mutiny reactor), 30min on, 1.5 hours off, any longer and I struggle to reduce nitrates). Used to be quite OCD about quarantining fish, but learned that I killed way more fish with harsh quarantine than disease kills, so haven't quarantined any fish for this tank specifically, there has been white spot in my tanks for about 10 years, even after quarantining everything back then it still managed to get in, but hasn't killed any fish. Still won't be stupid and add an obviously diseased fish.

I'm still working on my nutrient control, but so far it's been working out relatively well. I'm using a Reefmat 1200 with a Refugium on a 16hr light timer, Skimmer, and Elimni NP from Tropic Marin. I also have a ton of Rock in the DT and an entire compartment of my sump dedicated to media.

With all of that and weekly 15% water changes, I'm around 20 Nitrate and .2 phosphate. A bit high to be sure, but my corals look good and I don't have to worry about algae due to the tangs, Foxface, and urchin.

I'm considering GFO, but honestly, I'm a bit apprehensive about moving to lower nutrients and chasing numbers. My tank is happy with high nutrients at the moment. If Phosphate gets to around .3 or .4 I'll probably reconsider.

I thought I did… then I saw some of these lists!
In my 4’x2’x18” tank i have approximately 13-14 fish;
1x Coral Beauty Angel
1x Majestic Angel
1x Regal Angel
1x Gold Nugget Wrasse
1x Jade/Green ‘Coris’ Wrasse
1x Radiant Wrasse
1x Cebu Lubbock’s Fairy Wrasse
1x Indo Lubbock’s Fairy Wrasse
1x Naoko’s Fairy Wrasse
1x Black Photon Clown
1x Magnificent Foxface
1x Copperband Butterfly
1x Twinspot Tang
1x Yellow Watchman Goby

And I may be forgetting something but generally, that’s it for fish (Yes, some of my Fairies are coming towards the end of their expected lifespan but id expect Atleast another year from them).

In my nano (3’x16”x1’);
1x Blue Star Leopard Wrasse
2x Pink Streaked Wrasse
1x Black Clown Goby
1x Yasha Goby
1x Griessinger’s Goby
1x Mandarin Dragonet

And I may be missing someone.
But I do want to add fish to this tank so here’s some I’d love to add;
1-2x Yellow Clown Goby (Or a different species of clown goby to)
1x Vivienne’s or Choat’s Leopard Wrasse

I want to keep pipefish, but I’ve heard that they do best in a seahorse/species only setup. What’s your experience been with having your pipefish with tangs and such in a community tank? Wondering if I could also do it. What do yours eat? Pods? Frozen? I’m concerned about my other fish outcompeting them for food.

Have you noticed if the orca titanium bio cubes for nitrate reduction have lowered your pH at all?

Same, I want the yellow banded but I was recommended the dragon face because they’re better swimmers (LFS info) still trying to decide

Unfortunately with Dr Reef you never know what you're going to get...
