Overflow drain pipe noise

Any idea what I should do to help quit this drain definitely louder than my Liking Just got this tank setup today and I’ve tried to cap it and drilled holes through the cap that didn’t help I’ve read up on some other remedies Any ideas ?

Short-term: ear plugs. A cover for the overflow portion might help a bit.

I'm still relatively new but i had the same issue with my old overflow. i ended up getting a new eShopps overflow that's A LOT quieter and the only difference i see is that they glued a straw inside of the PVC pipe so that it provides a path for the air to escape instead of it fighting with the water while trying to get out causing it to gurgle. You could try that and see if it works. If anything it's extremely cheap and easy to try before going out and buying an expensive alternative.

Then you can just fine tune the amount of water being allowed to drain with a ball valve underneath before going into the sump/filtration to best fit your tank flow.

Tried to cover the over flow a little bit no noise redux really. Air and water fighting at the top creating a loud swirl gurgle noise I’ve seen durso styles that might work in my case I just don’t know though. I don’t have an emergency drain lol

Do not put a valve on the drain and create a siphon unless you have an emergency drain pipe for backup.

The easiest way to reduce noise is to slow down the return pump with a valve. The noise is from too much water going down the drain and sucking air along with it.

The *best way would be to change that 2 hole setup to a Herbie drain system using both pipes as drains. You then have to run a return over the back of the tank.

There was another thread like this a couple days ago. Try flexible tubing instead of hard plumbing. Nice big S curves from the bulkhead to your filter / sump.

Dang. Well I guess I’ll have to figure it out I did get a new return pump cause the one the guy gave me was crap and probably more then what I needed so hopefully this new one will adjust lower than the current one I have

Take out the return pipe and go over the side. Now you can set up a Herbie.
Safer, quiter, and faster.
Edit: and to fill that hole in your Weir, have the return go in the box and the loc - line go thru it. Then just cover the box with sheet foam

I could do that. Cause there’s a quarter inch splitter between the hoses to make fit from return pump to return bulk head I could use something like this

Yes, something like that picture. The barbed fittings style with hose clamps would be easiest. 1/4" is smaller than most return pumps have for an outlet. Use whatever size fits the tubing you have.

Just wondering but how would putting a valve on the drain, which only changes the amount of water being let through, create a siphon? Everything else makes sense, if the main drain clogs for any reason the emergency drain would begin to work

If it doesn't work you only lose a few bucks. That's why I tried it in the first place. But it worked for me.

Decreasing the amount of water going down the single drain will raise the level of water in the overflow. When the drain is far enough under water, it will act as a siphon. Air will no longer be in the drain, and it will be silent. That's how reefers set up a Herbie or Beanimal drain system.

Yes, you need the emergency/trickle pipe to make it safe. Without the emergency/trickle drain, any blockage (even a partial one) risks flooding the display.
