Petco isn't all bad!!

Good post @revhtree, seeing the positive

I agree that not all are created equal. The ones around my area are actually petty nice. These were at one of my local Petcos and were under observation/treatment along with the rest of their saltwater fish.

Haha, I swing through my local Petco this past weekend and also picked up a fairy wrasse for my daughter, couldn't pass up the $19.99 price. There are 3 in my area. I would purchase from 2 of them without too much worry. I agree that they can be hit or miss.

One thing that I keep seeing as a negative for Petco is that their fish have ich, brook, or velvet. Pretty much every fish store I have been to is dealing with the same thing. Isn't this why we should quarantine all new additions?

Petco Corporate has my email on permanent block because they are tired of hearing about medications that _work_. :p

I think I am blocked too. I try to stay away from the "bad" Petco but when I do go I take pictures of the sick and dead animals and email them with a nice long rant.

I picked this snowflake up at a local Petco I usually have issues with on some days more than others, but for 40 bucks I think I got a good pick for the money,in a little skeptical on getting stuff from Petco sometimes just because of the bad trips I've had in there but I'm glad u bit the bullet and got this girl, I got a couple tokey geckos from them a few years ago and was kinda disappointed to hear they wernt going to try and sell them anymore

thats not true, we will continue to sell tokeys. They are a main seller in my store.

The one in my area hasent had them since, I talked to one of the managers and he said they were to much of a issue to handle, and take care of so they more than likely wouldn't keep them consistently [emoji44] (more of one of them on request things) it's amazing how hard them guys are to find if you don't want to order them offline, I love the pair I have they've even laid a few clutches of eggs(no success on hatching yet I got to get a incubator) however I did lose a female due to a heating pad faulting out... so I've been looking hard for the past couple months for a late juvi female or another pair and move my current male to a 20gallon

Most LFS will deal with diseases by using medications that actually kill the disease organisms - Petco's corporate policy is specifically not to do that. I've never heard a Petco staffer recommend quarantine, either. Now this is only my personal opinion, but since they offer no guarantee on marine fish, it's just not their problem when your new wrasse, tang, gramma, or ... dies - and takes your DT with it. Too bad. Saltwater's tough. (Does this opinion make me look cynical?) The fact that so many of Petco's marine customer base is likely to be new at this game doesn't make the situation easier for me to swallow.

This is why most reef keepers don't support Petco. If you shop there you are supporting their cruel and inhumane treatment of their livestock. This is no different than buying a dog from a puppy mill. You might think you are "saving" the livestock, but you are simply supporting their inhumane treatment of livestock.

I think petco's are good or bad depending on who they hire. There are 3 right around me and 1 is awesome. Always has healthy fish, the tanks are clean, and even has a few mushrooms (picked up a sweet purple yuma for $10.) The guy who runs their saltwater department has a tank at home and knows what he's doing. The other to are sketchy. The tanks are full of algae, the fish are super skinny, and they have some "favia" frags for sale that died a long time ago and are now algae covered skeletons (but you can still buy them...) If you talk to the employees about anything fish related, they have no idea. None of them stock fairy wrasses though! It's clowns, bangaiis (the littlest ones you've ever seen), PJs, a yellow tang or kole tang, and different dotty backs. That's it. Some times a cleaner goby.

My local PetCo is pretty good. I found a nice Niger Trigger at it. I would stop by once a week for a month and it was there every time swimming around. After that month I figured what the heck since they had some sale.

Also purchased shrimp, snails and crabs from them.

Actually at my store, we take wonderful care of our animal's, im the aquatics specialist/zookeepers there, and tell me this if we didnt care about our animals would we rush a 3.99 feeder rat to the vet for labored breething, cuz we do.
Also i quarantine all sick and new fish i do freshwater dips on fish with ich and change my substrate anytime i see a fish with ich.
