I'm glad you were able to stave off disaster. Happy Ending!

This thread should be a lesson. There comes a point in this hobby where a power outage for a few days can kill years worth of work and care with many $$$$ flushed.

I have a generator. I live in a hurricane prone area. While on a trip, our power went out. One of the protective power strips on my tank tripped when power was restored. I wasn't here to reset it and as we were gone only 3 days, I had no tank sitter. Many of my corals and fish were years old. I lost everything. 3 days. My problem could have been saved had I just had our usual tank sitter check.

I never felt the need for a generator, until I had 1000$ worth of coral.
We even added a Transfer switch to our house/breaker box after we had no power for SIX DAYS!
Plus a HUGE Generator to run it. Total cost about $2000 = Worth it!

The transfer switch makes using a gen so easy. One cord from the gen to the switch and in my case it feeds 6 circuts with no extension cords.

YES - Transfer switch is the way to go. Total cost for parts, Permit and Electrician was under $1000 and only took an hour or two.
We hired an Electrician and they handled all of the permits, also had an inspection afterwards of coarse.
At least I know it is done correctly vs me trying to do it. Again worth the price. We lose power WAY to often here in Washington state, all of those pine tree falling over on power lines, arghh.

I put in the transfer switch, pretty easy but I like messing with electrical.

For future referance, it is a good idea to have a backup power supply handy, have an appropriately sized airstone or some other way to oxygenate the water, and just in general have a backup plan.
