I've read and learned a huge amount on R2R and have implemented many "best practices" into my system and maintanence regimes. One that was very challenging for me was to QT all my new purchases (I have limited space for a QT).

Nevertheless, I made it happen.

I made my annual trek to Reef-a-Palooza and picked up some nice corals and rock flower anemones, brought them home and into the QT they went.

1 day later almost everything was dead. My heater failed and basically cooked everything. I feel ill.:(:eek:;Blackeye;Drowning;Inpain;Oldman;Sour;Vomit

So sorry for your loss :(did you have a controller of some sort? Or just relying on the heaters internal sensor?

@jgvergo do you still have your Apex? you could be a another temp probe and control the QT temp with that.

Thanks Crabs. I have an APEX on my DT. It's really a pretty sophisticated set up but it's too far away from my QT to use it. So yes, I was depending on the internal sensor on the heater.

I will continue to QT new arrivals because I know the benefits outweigh the risks, but dang it sucks to lose corals like that.

Dang..... sometimes things aren't meant to be.

For me....since 2007 I shutter to think how many tangs have died on me. Talking like $80-$120 tangs. I'd cry if I sat down and counted up all the losses.

Go eat a hot dog and drink a lot of beer for the 4th of July and don't bum yourself out :)

I'll take your advice skimjim, but I'll be substituting vodka for the beer ;)

@jgvergo, as long as I've been in the hobby, I've seen and read just about everything that can go wrong and alot has gone wrong for me. I've looked at it as a learning experience, hurts to see it happen, but still a learning experience.

I'm truly sorry for your losses and that next time it works out for you.

May I recommend a cheap heater controller you can use for any tank and is a good investment. A Inkbird ITC-308. It's cheap (around $30) and it works well.

Best of luck in the future and once again, sorry for your loss.

Hi jsker. Yep, but it's too far away to use with my QT :(

Hello back:)

There has to be some kind of extension that one could use for the temp probe or a module that one can extend out the wire.

Found this on Neptunes site. link They are suggesting a PM module

@Flippers4pups , the Inkbird looks perfect. I'm ordering one now. Thanks!

@jsker , Thanks for the pointer. @Flippers4pups recommended the Inkbird. I'm somewhat torn between the two approaches. I love my APEX and being able to monitor and control the QT is a huge plus. However, I'd need to run wires through a room and a door that is pretty inconvenient, unsightly and also would be a tripping hazard. The Inkbird seems like a very workable solution. I think I'll ponder a while before pulling the trigger one way or the other ("nothing good happens fast in our hobby" and I'll add that includes making decisions!)

Fins up!!!!!!!!!!! I dont have a reef controller, but run that inkbird on my reef. Flawless!

I’ve had one on each of my tanks for over 2 years controlling both heating and cooling, love them!

They are hugely popular in the hobby and Ive not read of one failing. I research everything in the hobby before buying anything. This one was a no brainier for me.
