That stinks, and agreed that’s why R2R is great. I hadn’t heard of inkbird but will surely be looking into one soon. Clicked on the thread from the email of threads by R2R. Glad I saw this (well sorta, hate you had problems tho) I’ve been trying to eradicate Zoa spiders recently from not using a QT. Got a large rock covered in RADE and Kaleidoscope zoas from LFS, never had an issue with any bad hitchhikers for years and the one rock I didn’t take time dip due to size and didn’t see anything suspicious “lazy”, I’ve lost probably close to 2k in zoas so far in 3weeks. It’s always one of the easy things to check or do that ends up costing us the most.

Is the QT you use the AIO?

I've read and learned a huge amount on R2R and have implemented many "best practices" into my system and maintanence regimes. One that was very challenging for me was to QT all my new purchases (I have limited space for a QT).

Nevertheless, I made it happen.

I made my annual trek to Reef-a-Palooza and picked up some nice corals and rock flower anemones, brought them home and into the QT they went.

1 day later almost everything was dead. My heater failed and basically cooked everything. I feel ill.:(:eek:;Blackeye;Drowning;Inpain;Oldman;Sour;Vomit
Ouch, sorry for your loss.
I have lost many things in the past. What I have learned, what can go wrong, will.
Now I will always test in real world time new things before actually implemented while I'm there. For instance, if I'm leaving on vacation I will set everything up a few days before to prove out all equipment works before I leave. Like the feeder or top off equipment.
Again, sorry for your loss.

Oh man, that's painful...so sorry!

My QT is pretty a pretty simple DIY...It's a plastic container with a HOB filter, egg crate to hold frags, heater (Aqueon 150) and a powerhead.

So sorry for your loss, it just happens sometimes....

how are you being punished for doing the right thing?

It seems that many of the newer heaters that I’ve bought recently have failed within a year or less. Jager - Eheims seem to be more reliable though and I have bought three of them within the last year. I’ve been fortunate that my most recent heater failures have been failures in the “off” mode and I detected the failures before the fish froze. As much as possible underpower your heaters: two 100 watt heaters are better than one 200 watt heater. If one heater fails it takes much longer to boil or freeze the tank’s inhabitants. Check temps often. Most days I just touch the glass with the back of my hand the way my mother used to touch my forehead when she suspected I might have a fever. If it doesn’t seem right, I reach for my digital thermometer.

By the way, I am still using three hang on the back heaters that I bought in the seventies.

In this case "doing the right thing" was setting up and using a quarantine tank. Had I NOT "done the right thing" and simply dipped the corals and put them in my display tank, they would probably be alive.

So glad for the tip concerning the inkbird, I just have biocubes and have not invested in the Apex system.... As far as the accident you experienced I think each of us can sympathize... This hobby is definitely a live and learn experience, I don't dare add up the cost of my mistakes! Shake it off and move on learning from the experience...

There is an interesting survey asking the exact question of "How much have you lost?" Over 50% have lost $1000 or more.
