Pygmy angels in a reef... what's your experience?

I don’t know if i got “lucky” but mine was a terror, i had to rip the whole tank apart to get him out. He nipped at coral, bullied other fish, and set up home right in the middle and forced everyone to corners. I got him very small, sad to see him go but the tank is happier for it. And tank size is 50gal

Cherub, Flameback or other Pygmy variety angel?

I had a flame back that I had to rehome because he was an acan eating fool. I just had to catch my flame angel due to him eating my plate corals and nipping at every other coral in the tank including several SPS (shortcake, bonsai, digi,). Surprisingly the only thing neither fish ate was zoas.

Planning on at least trying some kind of angel in my 75 once it grows in enough to be able to sustain some nipping. If there is too much nipping he will get rehomed. Debating between a flame angel or a pygmy or cherub.

Although that’s unusual guess it can happen. Are you sure it’s the flameback?

Most angels are not reed safe and may find corals appetizing at one point or another. I think anyone who adds an angel has to be ready for that even if you read countless success stories.

Turns out that, when fed 2x a day, there appears to be no issue with nipping corals and all look fine.

The Cherub would probably be a better tank mate than the Flame Angel. Flames tend to be a bit more aggressive than some of the others. Smart move to wait on adding one as IMHO Pygmy and Dwarf Angels need well established tanks with algae growing for them to graze on. This helps increase the chances of success with them.

I’m going to get ALOT of hate for this one buuuut I actually am an aquatics specialist at a certain pet store and you can request them to order fish for you if they are able to get it from venders in fact I got a Pygmy today for myself and if you do this I HIGHLY recommend you pick up the fish the day they receive and before they put them into their systems I do this for my customers all the time. Ask them to just give you a call .It’s much less stressful for the fish to acclemate them twice but this was they are less likely to get diseases etc.

It seems like a lot of extra work but this way you can actually see the fish before you purchase(usually you can’t online) and these “certain pet stores” are all over the U.S and much more easily accessible compaired to some LFS.

About 30-40 minutes north east of Columbia, SC. Closest LFS is 15 minutes away in NE Columbia, VERY limited fish selection. I've gotten most of my fish, present and past, from Live Aquaria.

Yea, I know about the reviews on blue zoo... not thrilled about the idea of ordering from them.



Why would you say over stocked? I'm not arguing just trying to see your point of view. My tank looks empty with my current stock. I was considering one of the pygmy wrasse, wetmorella I believe is the scientific name.

Fishy Buisness is a great store, a little bit of a drive for me. The tank I was asking about is sitting dry now tho. I decided not to add a cherub angel to it, and then upgraded to a 90g cube tank. I tried a coral beauty twice but my clownfish will not have it. They are completely laid back and do not mind me nor other fish. I've never been bitten and never seen aggression from them, until I added the coral beauty.

My girlfriend just won a reefer 250 and she will have a nox dwarf angel in her tank.

This thread is very old, but if you still haven’t found a cherub angle,
KPaquatics.com is the best fish/coral online store to date, and I trust them with ALL shipments. I only order from them.
They have cherubs.
