Question for you clown experts

Would they clean something that is already immaculate? I just put the tile in so its clean as can be.

I can almost guarantee that they won't lay on that tile. And yes they would clean it anyway. They will lay where ever the feel most comfortable, probably the worst place for you, and once they find that spot you can put the tile right over it. And no it doesn't need to be flat. Even once the tile is placed over their spot they still may not lay on it, it may take a few tries.

Also, how big is the female? Would it be safe to say maybe size comparison plays a role? The bigger the fish the more room for eggs hence less round?

when clowns first start laying there is a learning curve for them, they have to figure it out and clutch sizes are usually pretty small. When the female in the pic first started laying she looked nothing like in the pic, she wasn't much bigger than she normally was if at all. By the time the pic was taken their clutches were huge hence her size. She was probably around 2.5" or so.

As others have mentioned you'd want to set up you rotifer culture before attempting to raise your first fry. The fry will only feed on rots for up to the first 10 days or so, so you'll need a steady supply. But first things first see if they lay and take it from there. If they do lay the male will tend to the eggs, he'll rarely stray too far even to feed.

Every clown is different as they say. I had a pair breeding for years and never got huge bellies. My current pair of ocellaris lay like clockwork for the past year and still no huge belly. My skunks are beginning. Had only one clutch and no belly (not expecting one though) and my clarkiis have not started yet nor my percs.

My indigo dottyback always had a huge belly, but only for a day. I lost here when I noticed the belly large for about three days. I could not get to her to do anything about it. :(

Keep us up to date. I hope it is just pre-egg laying. I just had never seen a clown that large in the belly. Gars thanks for sharing your pics. Now I have. :)

Why won't they lay on the tile?

If it was eggs, she probably laid somewhere. Look for the male.

If it was overfeeding or something, she's empty now. Lol

Male is by his anemone. But then again lights are off...would he guard the eggs even without the lights?

I'd see what he's doing when lights come up. I can't say that I've ever noticed mine tending eggs when lights out.. But I don't think I've ever looked either..

Its gonna suck if they laid in the most unconvenient place....underside of my skimmer pump....

OH YEAH!!!!!!!! Either way, she looks back to normal. If you want to collect eggs and raise them, you need to do some research first. A lot goes into it. Also, the first few times they lay, they are not too good at it and the hatch rates are not real good.

Good luck!!!!

Yeah ive done a lot of research over the past year and a half, i was able to raise brine shrimp so i know thats not a problem.

Not really sure now that the lights are on that she changed.

Just a question. Do the peas have to b boiled or can i just peel them once unthawed?

They should be posted
Must have cross posted. I agree they both look fat. How much have you been feeding them? I remember you said daily, but can't remember if you said how much and what your feeding..

I would boil the pea first to soften it a bit. Doesn't take very long.
