QUIETEST wavemaker?

Nero 5.

mine actually got turned off a few weeks back while I had a heater issue and I didn’t realize they shut down for a couple of weeks....because they are silent.

I pulled it out of the tank without removing the magnet so it went back in in the same location and was easily disassembled for cleaning. I reset it and had to watch the find to make sure it was turning on.

Silent.
surprised you didn't notice the lack of water movement

How are you liking those? I’m very intrigued by them. I’m currently building a 90g DT and cannot settle on a wave maker.

I'm liking them alot so far. They are doing exactly what I want. Now these are my first gyres I've ever used so I dont have much to compare them with and mine are still in a cycling tank (see build tag) so I haven't had alot of time with them. But they are plenty strong and I really ike the versatility of placement...and silence!

I always used mp40s but wanted to try something new on my current build.

I have mine setup like this on a waterbox 100.3

No lights over tank yet so cant take real world pics yet.

I like how you can position each side of the pump to different orientations and they move alot of water!

There is the Aqamai KPm by Hydor. DC wavemaker, App controlled on your phone. 2700 GPH Max. 2 year warranty. Very quiet and smallest in its class.

me too. I am running a gyre as well as an over powered return pump so that’s my excuse, but I feel ashamed that I missed the Nero not running.

I was also dealing with a heater that crapped out so the tank was way out of sorts.

If you want really quiet then a combination of slower speeds, larger props, constant speed, and good isolation is key. I've settled on a tunze 6255 at 20% on a sea sweep, a Jeboa CP-150 (weirdly this was the quietest of all the gyre pumps I tried at the time- and it requires basically no cleaning), and a custom tunze wavebox (with over-sized pump being under-driven). That is for a 180g. Like BlueZreef said, if you vary the gyre pumps (including jebao) they make horrific noise.

The Tunze Stream 3 is really quiet but there is some prop noise, especially at highest speeds, and I'm not a huge fan of the form factor. The Nero 5 seems quiet, although I have only heard it on a friends tank, but the larger prop size seems good for noise reduction.

I found MP40 QDs to be really loud, but I needed a lot of them because of the form factor and had to run them on higher speeds to get enough flow. I wasn't willing to spend $700 on a Mp60 to try them.

Remember that noise is all relative- what is quiet to one person might be really loud to another. Also chasing quiet can get very expensive. I would be just fine with a $200 tunze pump, but have a $500 tunze pump just to cut a little noise. And I've spent over $100 replacing all the fans in my lights with the quietest fans I could find.

No pump is ever going to be dead silent, personally I would disregard these statements.

I have the two 350 gyres and they are quiet, I can hear my Vectra pump and Jebao DCS3000 over the top of them for context.

I just changed to nero5 with fish guards (to keep my clown goby pair safe) from a fellow reefer that had a 3D printer. Love them learned how to anti synchronize them. So quiet and easy to clean. Got them on sale which was a big plus for me.

Almost any decent wavemaker is going to be quieter than a return pump or a skimmer-- but if you have a separate fish room or basement sump then the DT can be very quiet, and the wavemaker noises become more noticeable- and they tend to be more annoying than the constant white noise of a return pump. Or at least that was my experience.

What is a DT, and yes you are right but without context what else can you say, some say a pump is a

What is the "DT"

Nero5, I have 2 in my Reefer 170 and they are silent. I’m not as sensitive as some to sound but I noticed a difference immediately compared to my MP10s. That said the MP40 is definitely quieter than the MP10 but even that made some noise. I do miss the aesthetics of no cords in the tank as I have them on the back wall where the MP10 motor is completely hidden. If it were on the sides I probably would take the Nero5 for aesthetics as the magnet on the glass is very small.

For sure quiet is an opinion. For me quiet means dead quiet. I can't hear anything when watching a movie during silent scenes and my 75 w/30g sump is sitting 3 feet away. Only noise from my system is a slight fan noise from my hydra 26 fans when they occasionally run. My refrigerator is significantly louder. Many people told me Icecaps were quiet. They aren't! As a person earlier in this thread mentioned about his, it had a whir up and down. You can review this thread here: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/icecap-1k-gyre-pump.362664/#post-6136739 I ended up going with Jabao (but it isn't a gyre) I also went with Jabao on the return. When I was sifting through this I used this thread: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/return-pump-considerations-fact-based-75g.574903/ I got a used MP10 for a circulation pump and it was significantly louder. Got rid of it. Possible it needed to be cleaned? I have had my Jabaos running now for about 8 months and still no noise and no cleaning. We will see how long they last.

i have to be honest and say i couldnt afford the high brand names and found the jebao OW-25 for 55.00,i use it on my 75 gal and i was very shocked by the outcome and power and silence of this lil thing!!i too have it on a newer set up but had to turn it down to half way because i got to much wave ,lol-for the price and working abilities(with options) i like it alot-time will tell....

+1 The new Red Sea wavemakers. The app isn’t intuitive and they’re pricey but the quietest gyres I’ve used.

Do the pump sounds in our tanks disturb our fish? I have always wondered how the rattles of pumps cycling impact the livestock. It makes me think something like a few sea sweeps would reduce in water noises.

Reef Octo pulse 2 ! just got one and really impressed with flow and how quiet it is.. I had a tunze quit working after several years and made the switch.
