Rare Corals/Corals Absent from the Hobby

Another coral that’s almost completely absent over here is the Red Glitter Goni. I’d love a frag of it but they’re Aussie coral so when LFSs have them it can be sketchy.

I would love to have one of those, they have some amazing colors!

Wow just found this for sale. Didn’t know dendro could grow like this @encrustingacro is this rare or is this how a dendro will grow if you give it enough time

Most azoox Dendrophylliids--aside from Tubastrea coccinea--are pretty rare in the hobby. I'm not very well-versed in the world of Dendrophyllids--or azooxanthellate corals in general--so I cannot attest to whether this is a Tubastrea or Dendrophyllia. From what I know, there are a few undescribed species in this family.

I just bought a pretty decent colony. Completely covering a Rick about 10" tall and 6 or 7" wide. I can't find out much about it. Mine was in a store in the back of the coral tank...forgotten about. So it was in need of some love. No polyps visible not a place for them to come out. What parameters does it like regarding flow and light? Any help would.be appreciated.

Honestly that is not a very big Rick. I knew one that was 6’8”.

I saw two rhizo for sale that were incredible, white and orange, on eBay, about 10 years ago. I would have bought them but I was in the middle of a move. I told myself next time I see them I’ll get some.

Well I moved then looked for them and found out how rare they are, and illegal to import. And I never saw them again for sale

I feel like those have gotten more common over the years, though they don't last long in captivity. My LFS regularly has imports of them.

If you ask nicely @Ironwill723 may be able to give you some guidance. He has kept it before. I’ve never kept it and I haven’t seen it for sale in LFS for years.

I have dendros and they do encrust...............that pic looks like Tubastrea to me.............never kept them so I can't offer any insight.

Dendros are common and easy to aquire.

I would guess that coral is a Dendrophyllia based on dendroid growth structure. From what I know, most Dendrophyllia in the hobby are Tubastrea megacorallita, which are illegally collected from Hong Kong and smuggled through Indonesia.

Are there any corals either seldom found or nonexistent in the hobby that you wish you could keep or were more common in the hobby?

I'm keeping one rule on this thread that the corals have to realistically be able to enter into the hobby, so no Caribbean, Western Indian Ocean, temperate, or deepwater corals

I'll start:
Currently, virtually all Leptoseris in the hobby are of one species: L. mycetoseroides. I would love to see other Leptoseris species be imported--maybe something like L. papyracea/gardineri, or L. explanata/scabra.

I've asked around a bunch on this one. Various opinions on what it is. it's my favorite piece in my tank. Its done a decent job at growing and has plating buds coming from the back.

I've only been doing this 8 months so im not very knowledgeable as to whats out there or not but ive definitely done my share of research for corals to buy...

I would love to see more Lobophyllia rowleyensis. Previously it was known as Australomussa rowleyensis. There's some pretty stunning morphs of that were briefly imported, but then they kinda slowed up on it.
